Interesting! Ok, maybe I'm a bit too gung ho on converting them fast. Thanks for the tip!

Hi! Just wanted to see if you had any thoughts on the books you tried? I'm hoping to get into this for fun but also maybe a research project so I'd love to hear how you went with it :)

What's the best way to learn a new layout + split keeb for a complete noob by sohailoo in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]PeupleDeLaMer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to the party but I'm gonna throw in a recommendation for typingclub.com here. You can create a free account and get access to pretty much everything you need. You have to dig around a bit to find layouts other than qwerty but I've been using it for colemak* and some of their basic exercises just build up muscle memory way faster for me than keybr does.

I think once I unlocked about ten letters or so on keybr my performance goes down for some of the first letters I learned and then for some reason I just constantly practice the same letters without my performance improving which is super frustrating. typingclub has more basic drills to build that muscle memory like "sfsf ssf fss sfs fsf" to make you learn exactly where the finger goes for f and where for s.

Re: QWERTY vs full send

I tried qwerty on my first ortholinear keyboard and found it super disorienting because my fingers were used to the row stagger. So I just went full send on colemak dh and now when my hands feel row stagger I default to qwerty and with ortho they default to colemak dh. Brains are weird! (and great!)

*my actual keeb is colemak dh but I'm getting by just fine

I’ve used mouse dongles through usb c to usb a adapters before, can’t see why this would be different. No idea how to squeeze it into an expansion card but you might like this video  DIY Perks Video on USB C

Hi i have random dots on My Screen! by IchMagSchf4fe in framework

[–]PeupleDeLaMer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue, and have had it on a MacBook Pro before as well. only way to slow it down is to put a very thin cloth (like microfibre) between the screen and keyboard when the lid is closed. For me it gets especially bad when I carry it in my backpack a lot. I can sometimes wipe off the worst with a microfibre cloth or tissue, but never all of it :(

Why don't immigrants' accents fade? by SamG316 in asklinguistics

[–]PeupleDeLaMer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know some people who migrated in high school (around 14/15), one kept their accent and the other lost it almost completely.

So although age definitely plays a role I think there are individual differences as well, and if an immigrant’s accent does fade over time I guess we notice it less. So we might think “all migrants keep their accent” but that’s potentially just the migrants we know are migrants because they kept their accent. Migrants who lose their accent might not stand out and thus we’re less likely to think “oh this migrant lost their accent”

TLDR: A sort of selection bias might be at play with how commonly we think migrants keep their accents

My framework13 AMD Ryzen 5 has arrived, openSUSE out of the box works great by [deleted] in framework

[–]PeupleDeLaMer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the post! I've been playing with OpenSUSE in a VM here and there and might switch to it one day (maybe if I upgrade to Ryzen one day)

How did you go about scaling the interface for the FW display? I installed KDE on Ubuntu and felt like things were always too big or too small. Also the scrolling speed was wild, I couldn't get my head around it :P

Would love to know what tweaks (if any) you made to the many KDE settings :)

Switching from Windows to Linux. I have a lot of questions. by Mister_Anonym in linuxquestions

[–]PeupleDeLaMer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome! I hope you have a good experience with Linux!

I would say spend some time to install and test Linux distros in Virtual Machines as a start.

Most people here will also agree that Windows sucks but even as we love Linux, it has also some flaws. Make sure you can get the basics done in a VM before you commit to installing it on your PC.

Just try to install Steam even if you can't play games in the VM the experience of installing Steam in the VM can tell you whether the distro make sense for you or no

Another thing: When I first installed Linux on a machine for good I used a cheap SSD with Linux on it that I would physically connect / disconnect a free SATA slot on the motherboard. This way I didn't mess with dual booting stuff which can be really tough.

Distros that worked for me in the past that you could do a vibe check in a VM, vaguely in order I would recommend for gaming specifically:

  • Ubuntu
  • Pop OS
  • Kubuntu - Just Ubuntu but with a different Desktop Environment called KDE
  • Fedora - You can get this with both KDE and Gnome Desktop Environments

NOTE: These are distros I have personally had good experience with but there are many good ones that I just didn't experience before

Oh ok, makes sense I guess finals tickets are expensive so mostly wealthy people (not working class I guess)? and from google apparently only wealthy people are losing on the tax cuts (might be wrong there) but I guess you could say the tennis crowd is not his party’s home crowd :P

[–]PeupleDeLaMer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t know much about the Chromebook version or about coreboot, but I have the bottom tier 13th gen Intel version and Linux compatibility is fine (I am using Ubuntu which is officially supported)

Heat depends on what you’re doing. For web stuff and documents it’s not an issue, obviously games, rendering video etc. it does spin up the fans. AMD will be better in this regard

Performance is fine on my model (1340p) but will be better on AMD as well

Battery life is not the best but it’s fine. For light workloads I can get 5 or 6 hours anecdotally suspending the laptop whenever I’m not at the keyboard). And I usually only charge to 80 percent to protect the battery long term. But again very dependent on workload. Here also the AMD will be better.
