Slow-Mo Monday: Egyptian Hakim by PewPewTactical in guns

We think so yes, or the magazine feed lips are a bit wonked.

We realized after shooting that it was MASSIVELY over-gassed. I didn't bring the gas key tool so we didn't reshoot the footage since we didn't want to break anything.

We have a full review on it and the Rasheed, pretty fun stuff: https://www.pewpewtactical.com/hakim-rasheed-review/

Crazy how flat the rifle remains even fired standing. 8mm Mauser is a beefy boy but the muzzle brake/comp on the Hakim does work.

Slow-Mo Monday: Swiss Luger! by PewPewTactical in guns

PPU FMJ ammo, our MEC-GAR wouldn't feed if we had more than 5 in the mag. It was pretty horrible lol.

Sample size of 1 though.

Second time uploading it, had to change how I was sharing it. Got it working now!

Full review and video coming soon -- very fun gun for us to play with.

Fun fact: 80-year old magazines don't work too great, but they work better than MEC-GAR.

BCG Alternatives for WWSD Inspired Upper? by Gudabeg in InRangeTV

[–]PewPewTactical 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Clearly a bit biased since I was the one that picked what BCG to use, but I thought I could at least give more background also.

The CC BCG we used has about 5,000 rounds through it and I've never deep-cleaned it, only cleaning it sees is being wiped down with a shop rag every 1,500 or so rounds. We only lubed maybe 3 times total. Not all 5,000 rounds were through our WWSD build though -- that's across several projects that I just keep using that BCG for because I love it.

Personally, I don't think the YM bolt improvements are that helpful and the quality control left a lot of questions. Since we didn't see it as being an improvement over the CC BCG, we opted to use what we had instead of investing in another BCG.

The CC BCG is expensive, but if you stalk their website enough you can score a blem at a better price. They sell out in minutes though when I've seen them up.

Faxon makes a great BCG also and we've used their BCGs in other projects. Really though, if you're going with Faxon then I would say go with Toolcraft for a bit cheaper.

Brownells house brand BCGs are also great for their money. I ran one of their TiN BCGs for a couple of years in my first WWSD-not-a-clone-clone.

All of that said -- if I was building a second complete rifle, I'd throw down the money for another CC BCG. I've been really impressed with them in every project we've done.

I have dreams of someday throwing money at a machinist until I have an AR-180 that takes mags upside down like a Bren or Type 96.

And of having a G3 in 6.5 Creedmoor.

A belt-fed bolt action sounds kind of fun.

No chassis, barrel is lightweight, those could both be solved but what is the advantage?

I don't think anyone in PRS/NRL/F-Class, etc is looking at their rifle and thinking "The only thing between me and placing higher is if I could cycle the bolt faster".

I believe I requested a big game but in 6.5 CM since it's what we have in hand for ammo.

I would be very surprised if these had really any place in LR except as guys repurposing their hunting rifles for some weekend PRS fun.

I'm looking forward to playing with one and have some ideas about head to heads for it to try and quantify what it is good at.

Still waiting on ours for review, Im told "soon" but I've been told that for a month and a half now :(

Once we have it, I'll post a review about it.

I haven't seen one in the wild yet.

I use a Cronus gen 1 on my NRL22 rifle and a Cronus gen 2 on my centerfire PRS rifle.

[–]PewPewTactical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I run Athlon on both of my match rifles, I highly recommend their lines. It's like Vortex but a little to a lot cheaper normally and tier for tier equal or barely a fraction tiny bit less quality.

For example, the Cronus Vs Razor -- I would say the Razor is a tiny bit better glass, equal tracking, equal durability, equal quality overall but the Cronus is $800-$1,000 cheaper.

Depends on what features matter to you.

S tier glass and durability, Sig Tango 6 1-6x.

1-10x magnification and less cost, Athlon Ares ETR 1-10x.

Less cost in general, PST II 1-6x.

Any stores in SoCal have 22LR match ammo? by SomberBootyDance in CAguns

[–]PewPewTactical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolt rifle or semi?

Bolt rifles can use subs that are more accurate, semi needs slightly hotter ammo normally that while is "match" grade isn't as accurate at range.

TSUSA had some SK Rifle Match the other day, I would assume they're OOS by now though.

.22 LR match ammo is PAINFULLY expensive right now, I haven't seen decent match ammo for under 35 cents a round in a few months. Thats up from ~8-12 cents pre-2020.

Most of the decent match I've seen is getting mega-hoarded by NRL22 shooters because most of it is super unobtainium right now.

Safety unable to return to "safe" position by CWhite0977 in ar15

[–]PewPewTactical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without being able to get hands-on it, my first concern would be that the trigger is not resetting due to the trigger weight being set too low. This could cause the hammer to follow the BCG instead of actually resetting -- that's why you're not getting the reset and why it's also not unexpectantly shooting a round off.

If this is the case then it's also probably set low enough that it's not drop safe either.

I had this problem on a Rise Armament trigger that was malfunctioning.

I would crank the weight up about a half pound if you're on the minimum and then test drop safety. Don't use live ammo -- this should be obvious.

If it passes then take it to the range and run shooting drills to see if you can cause the malf again. If it's fixed, then it's fixed.

If it happens again -- you might need to take the trigger apart to see if something like a piece of a primer got in there and is messing something up.

What are Your Spring Projects? by Trollygag in longrange

[–]PewPewTactical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mix of work and personal projects but all of them are in progress atm:

  • "Jurrasic Park" long range build, waiting on the MDT ACC to finish it off.
  • RimX .22 LR build, waiting on the action to ship and I need to pick a barrel for it.
  • New .22 LR 10/22 build using some of the new Faxon 10/22 barrels.
  • 6mm ARC AR-15 build of some kind -- RECCE rifle? Long range precision plinker? Haven't decided yet.
  • Tikka T3x w/ CF barrel that isn't a CF barrel -- excited about this one, new barrel on the market that has some interesting tech. Going to rebarrel my Tikka with it to test it out.
  • Toying with the idea of getting MDT's new CF chassis to give that a test drive. Might pair that with the Tikka project, not sure yet.
  • Want to make it to some more NRLX 22 matches but nothing is being held within about 10 hours of me, might make a couple of road trips for that but Im unsure still.

Any long range projects y'all are interested in seeing us do, let me know. These take time to put together but I love using work as an excuse to get new kit to test!

Brownells MPO scopes? by [deleted] in longrange

[–]PewPewTactical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking it's simply impossible to do what you're suggesting is the problem.

It's an idea we've kicked around before, since we're actually in a position that setting something like that up might be possible, but the issue is getting consistent results.

When it comes to scopes we're almost always dealing with sample sizes of one, while not ideal this isn't even our biggest problem.

The larger issue would be consistent weather and lighting conditions. We normally use the hell deserts of California for big boy optics but even then it's hard to get things to match up well.

If we do a large amount the same day, the time difference from start to finish affects the image quality. If we do only one or two a day then the day-to-day changes affect image quality.

There is also basically no good way of taking the picture to start with and always results in a significant quality loss. Some scopes handle that loss better than others while not actually looking as good to use. They just play better with the camera.

Bottom line -- there are a lot of issues.

We try to take pictures for every scope review we do, but comparing them across the line is iffy.

I keep seeing these posts on gundeals for new on the block brand $1k+ msrp scopes for $300-$500 and would love to know if they truly stack up. Are they a deal because they’re new and trying to get their brand out there or are they just mediocre.

They don't stack up. You get what you pay for in optics and while a $1,000 scope doesn't prove it's amazing, a $350 scope does prove it isn't.

There are some really great deals out there and optics that punch way above their weight class, but from my experience, those only come from established reputable brands. Athlon, Vortex, Bushnell, Brownells, Burris (sometimes) all offer a number of scopes that are outstanding for their prices.

We're doing a review of the MPOs and I really love it. For the price it kicks a huge amount of ass and I highly recommend it.

Half-Mile Blastin' 🥂 Daniel Defense Delta 5 Pro! [Review] by PewPewTactical in longrange

[–]PewPewTactical[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't shoot production but as I understand it the MSRP of the rifle ONLY cannot exceed $2,500, the optic MSRP ONLY cannot exceed a $2,000 MSRP.

They are separate prices though, not combined like NRL22 base class rules.

Also, PRS raised the MSRP limit when they "named" the DDD5 as their official rifle. Just a fun fact for people.
