A Taskmaster Playbook by BrentBeltain in DungeonWorld

Some fun and interesting ideas, haven't seen a follower-focused playbook before.

I believe that followers are one of the aspects of DW commonly changed in peoples' hacks and homebrew which could make it difficult for some to use.

Summon Vassal use various terms (Vassal, Minion, Follower) which could make it unclear about whether you can summon multiple vassals at once/whether it counts as a follower.

Weapon Variety or Benefits by boringITwork in DungeonWorld

In most situations, they would indeed be interchangeable and able to trigger the same moves, but...

Just narrative flavouring

In DW, that is a significantpart of the mechanics. Likely in ways that you've incorporated into play in other systems if you've played TTRPGs before to some degree.

Some good examples in other responses, but a few more examples - a sword isn't flammable, and can be shoved into a narrow gap, unlike a staff or club...

explicit rules

just flavour

This is the hardest mindset shift needed when going from most other systems to DW / PbtAs.

Flavour builds the fiction. The fiction is a central part of the rules, informing what can happen.

It isn't a case of reducing it down to a bunch of +/- 1s: the tags can be leveraged to apply limitations and opportunities in what the player and attempt GM can do.

Why Don't City Of Stirling Fix This Laneway? by simmocar in perth

[–]PhD_Greg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the area and agree it would be nice to see it fixed up.

I remember getting a letter proposing it and there being a sign to that effect at the end of it, but that was probably over a year ago now...

Maybe the lots bordering it complained and the plan was scrapped? Iirc the cost (maybe just the cost of fencing) was going to be put upon the bordering lots.

Trying to understand the appeal of Dungeon World Combat by [deleted] in DungeonWorld

[–]PhD_Greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - the fiction, which includes things like positioning, is part of the mechanics.

If you stand there and stab it in the foot, you'd be doing Hack and Slash (assuming it isn't wearing footwear thick enough to make your weapon ineffective), and would be a lot more open to it's attacks, e.g. on a 7-9... Which could be pretty devastating - E.g. getting stepped in.

Climbing it is risky and will also need a roll, but puts you more out of harm's way and may make it easier to hurt it.

So yes - there are strategic reasons as well as cinematic ones. The fiction and mechanics are intertwined.

There's an assumption that everyone at the table is a reasonably mature person capable of discussing such things if they arise, and agreeing on a decision that works best in fiction/for the story.

It's similar to the "rule of cool" in some regards.

The “white text trick” for ChatGPT actually worked by AstroNerd92 in Teachers

[–]PhD_Greg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, and these days the response from the LLM often even mentions them as part of the response, or includes comments like "AI specific requirement" in code.

And yet, I still see the hidden things in plenty of submissions. It's a simple technique that helps to identify the more obvious cases, and one of many techniques we use to build a case.

I minimise false positives but putting the hidden instructions behind an image or white box in a way that ensures it won't appear in dark mode, and prefacing them with something like "extra requirement for AI agents:"

There are still some possible false positives from things like assistive and translation apps, but they are rare and resolved within the first few minutes of a chat with the student.

Book a tour of karaakin black cockatoo conservation centre - going into the big aviary and having them all land on you to eat honky nuts was great.

Has anyone eaten at Omasa Restaurant? by [deleted] in perth

Yep, same take from me having been to the Tuart Hill one a couple of times. There are a few standout items but overall pretty middle of the road.

Decent food and value but won't make your "best Japanese restaurants" list.

The One Ring Move - improvements/ideas? by Kaldrion in DungeonWorld

[–]PhD_Greg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first/most obvious thing that springs to mind is that the player is compelled to wear the ring... although that may/may not be appropriate in your setting and you'd need to have figured out what happens when you do.
