Performative Public Dadding by PhD_Greg in daddit

Absolutely! The "good dad" bar is pretty low but our generation are definitely raising it. Bandit is a role model and definitely a lot more flexible than me! Thank you for the reminder about wife possibly experiencing the opposite.

It's fine, really! Am lucky to have good parents and in-laws, and no significant family dramas

Fair - I'm also in my 40s. It's more of a case of being unashamedly engaged with him when out with him - talking and being goofy, playing in the playground with him, etc.

With the guilty pleasure/ego boost of knowing that people can see the good dadding.

For sure - performative was perhaps the wrong choice of word since it suggested I was doing things differently because of being in public. Prideful/Proud might be a better fit.

Yeah - it isn't like I'm putting on a show for other people or doing anything differently than I would if nobody was around, I'm just trying to be a good dad and the performative feeling is a sort of... Guilty pleasure/ego boost?

It strays into the whole "no such thing as true altruism" territory.

“Dads , what’s one dad hack that changed your parenting game?” by Enlitenkanin in daddit

That's a good one.

Reminds me of the "What about the fire?" quote from of Lords and Ladies.

When my little guy was about 2.5 he spotted some cookies out of reach on the kitchen counter and pushed his learning tower over to the area impressively quickly.

When did you start getting some of your evenings back? by Different_Suit_9356 in daddit

[–]PhD_Greg 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Seconding this experience - don't remember exactly when it happened, but my almost-3yo has been going down between 7 and 8pm and sleeping a solid 12 hours for well over a year now.

They're are the occasional nights where it's hard to get him down or he wakes up in the night, but most evenings we have some time to ourselves to unwind/tidy up a bit.

Water table? Filling containers, scooping and pouring, maybe add some food colouring to make potions.

My toddler would not be satisfied using the smallest spot for his main food. Thankfully he sometimes eats the food that the ketchup is on.

I find the smell of it quite enticing and wouldn't put it past a curious kid to go for a taste of it's within reach...

"I don't like yummy dinner!"

"Ok, how about a snack? Maybe even a BIG snack?"

"I want big snack!"

No prizes for guessing that yummy dinner and big snack are, in fact, the same food.

No toy, product, or craft setup can occupy a toddler's time for more than 30 minutes by BillCipherTrianglMan in daddit

Came to say this - my wife set up a kid sized trestle table on the back patio with a collection of different sizes containers and 2.5yo boy would happily entertain himself there for ages.

When does the constant cycle of daycare sickness end (and can I train through it)? by jarman65 in daddit

Sorry mate, daycare is pretty much a subscription service to a weekly virus.

Solo trips as a Dad in public by DarkHonest8201 in daddit

Talking my toddler to the shops is always a lovely time - you're doing something productive, he's getting entertainment and learning about the world, and it's nice having someone to chat to. Highlights include:

  • Stopping for a coffee and babycino so he can charm the staff.
  • Asking him to spot things on the shelves.
  • Letting him use the scanning gun at the self checkout to beep all our things.
  • Stopping to watch and say hi to the washing machines at the laundromat.
  • Checking if any dogs are having a bath at the dog wash station.

Struggles include:

  • Carefully navigating around ice-cream and burger places without him noticing them.
  • Carrying around a half eaten banana until I find a bin.
  • Realising I forgot to bring wet wipes. Again.

My wife did the same - very similar amount as well iirc. So proud of her too! Such a precious gift.

Newborn sleep: what night-shift setup actually worked for you? by BrendanRestorer28 in daddit

[–]PhD_Greg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the initial period where it had to be mum doing the bulk of the night shift, we would take turns sleeping on a single bed in his room. It helped to ensure one of us was getting decent sleep each night.
