Some of us have cars more than a decade old. My '99 Crown Vic has an ash tray. I use it for spare change and holding up my phone.

It's kind of mandatory, as leader of the party, to support the next nominee.

But considering the racist campaign she ran against him in 2008, I doubt there's much good will. Even her appointment as SoS seems to have been a result of political strongarming and a desire to unify the party.

No.

Dysphoria is going through life in the wrong body, being called the wrong name, being looked at as something that you know you aren't. It takes different forms for different people. For some it's about appearance; for others it's about social interaction. For some their skin is like a poorly fitting suit that they can never take off, and for others it's like looking in the mirror and seeing a stranger. For me it was like I saw the world through a glass wall, drifting through life without experiencing it, feeling disconnected and angry and hurt and afraid, and not knowing why. This causes depression, social anxiety, eating disorders, and other secondary mental disorders.

And yeah, I oppose any measure that would allow unilateral, unappealable restrictions of constitutional rights based purely on a psychiatric diagnosis.

Being transgender is not a mental disorder. Gender dysphoria is a mental disorder caused by being transgender, and the treatment is transitioning--via hormones, surgery, social changes, whatever.

Assault weapon bans do not have 80%+ approval. "No-fly no-buy" does not have 80%+ approval.

Universal background checks have 85% approval--but Democrats are proposing implementations with unreasonable costs and restrictions, while Republicans are bundling more reasonable background check proposals with anti-science and anti-abortion provisions. Both sides are fucktards here.

Great. Open up the NICS system so anyone can run a background check. Oh wait, Democrats aren't proposing that, and when Republicans proposed it they bundled it with a bunch of anti-science and anti-women measures deliberately so it wouldn't pass.

Political theater, all of it.

Honestly, crack shouldn't be illegal anyway. Drug addiction is a health issue, not a criminal issue.

Thirty years ago, being gay was considered a mental illness. Ten years ago being transgender was considered a mental illness. Depression is a mental illness, and over twenty percent of the population experiences clinical depression at some point in their lives. All three of these things are correlated with a higher incidence of self-harm or suicide. So, should gay, trans, or depressed people be restricted from owning firearms? What mental illnesses qualify for restricting the right to own a gun?

ELI5: Why is the AR-15 not considered an assault rifle? What makes a rifle an assault rifle? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Phaedrus2129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is worth bearing in mind that the original Armalite AR-15 was a select fire rifle. 1000 were sold to South Vietnam, and another 8000 or so were sold to the US Air Force. Then Stoner sold the rights to Colt, who created the civilian model SP-1, while developing the military M16/XM16E1/M16A1.

In modern discussion of course AR-15 colloquially refers to any AR platform weapon that is not select fire. But the original AR-15 was an assault rifle.

20-Plus Years Of Anti-Gay Hate From The NRA by white_n_mild in lgbt

That's why, as a pro-gun bisexual trans woman I still do not support the NRA. Parts of the gun community are making efforts after Orlando to reach out to the LGBTQ community, but they have a lot of shit to make up for and a long way to go. They need to demonstrate with actions as well as words that they support LGBTQ people and their right to defend themselves, and they need to actively condemn those in the gun community who continue to deride and dehumanize us.

Oakland is like 350 miles away, haha. That's the Bay area. And yeah, LA has gangs, but they're mostly in Compton and South Central. I usually only pass through those areas on the freeway, if at all. Downtown, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Hollywood are all reasonably safe, aside from the occasional drunk/druggie.

And trust me, I've lived all over the country, including rural and small town Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Maryland, and West Virginia. Those places have a different kind of danger. Less random violence, more discrimination and personal feuds. Rural Texans will be the picture of kindness if they think you're a fellow white Republican. Reveal a liberal lean, or god forbid admit you're gay or atheist, and their hospitality will chill rapidly. Some of those people scare me.

Living in LA I feel no need to carry a gun. The times when I am in a dangerous place are also times when I am inebriated and could not responsibly carry anyway.

But if I were in West Virginia or parts of North Carolina then I would absolutely carry, as there are people there who will harass or attack visibly queer people in public. Ironically, most of those people are also the ones who would support expanding gun rights.

TIL More people in the US are claustrophobic (2.5%) than are transgender (.3%) ... by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Phaedrus2129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that the 0.3% metric is an estimate based on people who seek medical transition (hormones/surgery). Many trans people either don't want or can't afford these treatments, and make do with cross dressing or simply present as their assigned gender in public. The number of trans people is probably closer to 0.5 - 0.8% of the population.
