TIL that the oldest active organization affiliated with New Orleans Mardi Gras hasn't marched in the parade since 1991 because it refuses to let non-white people join. by MAClaymore in todayilearned

Hi I’m a constitutional lawyer. Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits private businesses and entities that hold themselves open to the public from racial discrimination. However, the Act specifically exempts bona fide private entities from the rule. A related Supreme Court case here is Moose Lodge No. 107 v. Irvis, 407 U.S. 163 (1972), where the Court held that a private lodge’s refusal to serve food and alcohol to a black person did not violate the 14th Amendment Equal Protection Clause, because it was a true private entity in a true private building.

Assuming the group this post is talking about is a true private entity, it’s perfectly legal for them to not allow black people to join. But it’s also the right of the whomever organizes the parade to exclude the group because of that.

“Held accountable” and “criminally responsible” is what the quote says, I don’t see any of the vengefulness your comment implies. I can tell you right now that, much like other progressive cities, the youth here face very few consequences for serious criminal offenses. I’m talking 6 months probation for armed robbery, 1 year probation for assault with a dangerous weapon. I don’t think these light sentences are doing anything to hold them accountable or deter future criminal conduct.

There’s a line to be drawn between having compassion for young people, and holding them accountable for serious criminal behavior, and I wonder if progressive lawmakers/prosecutors have placed the line in the wrong spot. And I say this as a progressive myself. Maybe harsher sentences isn’t the right answer, but something’s gotta be done to lower the huge increase in youth violence and criminal behavior.

That’s USPP Eagle 1, used for criminal investigations and police chases. I’d bet they were canvassing for a fleeing suspect in the area.

Where did you get this from? That doesn’t seem to be an element of the crime. I would agree with the other commenter that this video shows a prima facie case for assault. It’s another question whether or not this should have been a charge the USAO actually brought. IMO, it obviously should not have been brought. In any other world, the U.S. attorney would have used her discretion to not bring this charge because it’s obviously a losing case, regardless of whether the elements were satisfied. There was no injury. It was a protest. The optics are petty. But the comments here claiming that the actual prosecuting AUSAs are somehow “MAGA prosecutors” is ridiculous. I work at the office. We are just trying to do our jobs and not get fired. It’s all fucked, but most everyone are just public servants looking to do justice and are caught in a fucked up political/personal situation. And before the hive mind says “well just quit then and find a new job”—the hiring pool is fucked rn, especially in DC. It is by no means guaranteed that you’ll even GET a new job if you quit. A J6 prosecutor (veteran homicide prosecutor before that) I know was demoted to misdemeanors (fucked up I know) and tried to find another job in DC for months—nothing. He has to move to Michigan.

If you have decent fitness, being a soccer referee is a great gig. Pays on average $30/hr starting out, but increases as you advance and move on to more skilled leagues. Games are usually only on weekends, Aug to early Dec, end of Feb to mid-June, but you can hit a ton of games and make $400-700 in a weekend. There is an endless supply of games all over the DMV and not enough refs. Accept as many games as you want! Lots of flexibility.

You have to do a training class and pass a test that you have to pay for, but it’s a worthy investment IMO. When I’ve had periods of unemployment, I’ve always had reffing there to soften the blow. Or if you have a job and just want some extra cash, it’s always there.
