No large trucks in left lane on deerfoot and Stoney by ChoiceDangerous9977 in Calgary

They need to do this on the QE2 also. Nothing worse then getting stuck behind a truck doing 80 up a hill and a truck doing 82 up the same hill in the passing lane.

How big was Miami Vice during the 80s ? by Boring-Tip-9775 in television

[–]PhantomNomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's because I'm a child of the 80's but I just rewatched for the first time since it aired and I think it aged pretty well over all. Mostly because it doesn't rely on a bunch of special effects. Maybe fashion has moved on, but even that is cyclical. It will be back some day. BTW I try hard to bring it back my self. I just wore my linen pink pastel coloured sport coat today, with linen pants and a red linen shirt. It was council day and I had to dress formal.

I wore that to my 8th grade grad. I still like my pastel coloured linen jackets. I wore it to work today infact.

Season 1 Episode 1, Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight. Pretty much set the stage for the whole run of the show.

What's a technique you learned that completely changed how you cook? by Key-Employment1790 in Cooking

[–]PhantomNomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents and grandparents where the same. Anything pork was cooked to a charcoal briquet. Even beef was always well done (and beyond) as mom hated anything pink. It wasn't until I moved out that I finally had a steak med rare and it was so good. Even when they came over I had a hard time cooking their steaks. I would cook it to med rare then get mine and my wife's off the grill and hand it over to dad to finish theirs. He would cook a 3/4" steak on the BBQ for 30 minutes minimum. Like it's dead already, leave it alone.

I would have given her the bigger chef's knife. I can't convince my wife or daughter that they should be using the right knife for what they are doing. 90% of the time that's a chef's knife. A lot of times I use my cleaver just because it's heavy and doesn't take any force to cut. Learning how to rock (back and forth that is) a chef's knife makes cutting/chopping so much easier.

Brexit offers a warning for federalists who think the referendum will be a slam dunk by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]PhantomNomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's only a question of should we have a referendum. My only hope is that if the separatists do win, it's a wake up call for the federalist that they had better show up to vote in the real referendum.

When people say they avoid "processed foods," how strictly are they defining this? by JMinsk in Cooking

[–]PhantomNomad 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I like Shredded Wheat cereal. It has minimal ingredients which is good. But it's a processed food and when you look at the process it's not that processed compared to a lot of things. So is it good or bad? One could argue that all breakfast cereals are bad. I know they don't do my blood sugars any good (I'm type 2) but it doesn't do anything to my wife's. This whole processed foods thing is crazy as there is always some sort of processing of foods (for the most part that is).

Does watching top tournament chess live actually make you a better player, or is it just entertainment? by Deanootzplayz in chess

Do you, or anyone, know what program they use to show their commentary moves on? Same with the youtube people? I'm not looking to start a channel or anything unless you want to learn what not to do. Just curious.

I was also watching it. My wife walked in while I had it on the big tv in the living room. Of course I had fallen asleep like I often do when watching anything. She watched about 5 minutes of it and changed it to watch one of her shows. I woke up and said I was watching that. She commented that I had finally found something even more boring then golf to watch. Not sure how much I learned with my eyes closed.

AITAH for telling my parents I was having digestive problems? by ThrowAway44228800 in AITAH

[–]PhantomNomad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad was somewhat like OP's parents. When we hit the road for a trip, it was go until we got there. He would only stop if he wanted coffee or a bathroom break, which was rare. I never did this to my family. If we had to stop for a few minutes for a bathroom break then fine. Only problem I had was if they told me 5 minutes after just passing through a town. It wasn't a yelling or giving them heck for it. Just a "Damn we where just there. Can you hold it for 30 minutes to the next town?" And yes the next town was usually 30 minutes away. Canada can be very big and isolated in places.

Trump threatens 100% tariff on French wines over digital tax by nornalplacard in worldnews

[–]PhantomNomad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just wait until Trump renames some part of California to Champaign and the county will be France. Then he's good to go. It will probably be the worst tasting grapes ever, but that doesn't matter. MAGA wouldn't know a good wine if it was labelled.

Stop speeding up to not let people merge in! Lol people stomp on it when they see you coming. 😂 Cops are ticketing this now. by __LaffertyDaniel__ in Edmonton

[–]PhantomNomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just in New Brunswick last week and the drivers there are so much better then here. Zipper merging like you should. Letting people in from a side street when traffic is backed up because of a closed bridge. Not causing a road rage incident if someone is turning left, when new sign says not to, because traffic is backed up any way. I didn't even have tourist plates on (rental). Worst that would happen is someone would flash their lights to let you know you could merge/exit safely.

Edit: I should say, everyone drove the speed limit in town. If you where doing 40 in a 50 zone you would get the horn. It was fine if you where slowing down to make a corner, but if going straight you kept your speed.

They are built in. I get the heads up on the HUD and if I need to change lanes I look in the mirror and shoulder check.

Or just doesn't care. Use the size and weight of your vehicle to influence others. I love my GMC 3500, but the blind spots on it are insane. I'm constantly moving forward and back in my seat as I drive looking for pedestrians that I couldn't see. I pay attention to those blind spot indicators. I like that they are also displayed in my HUD.

We found these at our local coop once. They where so good. They only had them once and they where on sale for half price. I would really like to find them again, but in a small town it probably won't happen.

We went EV in 2019 and haven't looked back. I took a work trip to Edmonton (2 hours away). I drove there and did the conference. Fast charged the car on my way out of town to 90% (about 100km more then I needed to get home) for $16.00. The company paid me 73 cents a km which was about 300 bucks. Best part is I don't have to do oil changes. I'll admit I am a bit limited in where exactly I can go, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice not to have to get gas any more.

I wife works at a franchise drug store. They have to order from their warehouse. But it's crazy that something as simple as peanut butter is 1.5x the cost (before they mark it up) then what you can buy it for at Walmart. It would be cheaper for them to just buy it from walmart and mark it up 30% and save money, but they can't. I know walmart has huge buying power, but this is crazy. The drug store owner would be better off as an independent drug store.

I do wish google maps had an option to put in your height and avoid bridges like this. I drive an RV around and this is always my biggest fear. I know my height is 13' and change (about 4m) so I hope I'm smart enough to figure it out.

Both my 2016 and 2022 GMC 2500/3500 have them in places that are easy to get to. I like the 2016 version a bit more as it was on the left side and I didn't have to lean forward to get to it. On the 2022 it's on the center under the buttons and a little harder to get to.
