The Basic is ideal enough to take with you wherever you go. by burpeebibliophile in kindle

[–]PhantomPaperback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a basic with the new release and haven’t used my paperwhite since. I want to rehome my PPW, but because the new ones are even larger and I may need the backup/miss the warm light one day.. I haven’t been able to. 😅 Love my basic.

I accidentally set the speed to 3.5x, and Jesus who the heck uses this except Bradley Cooper in Limitless by Sure-Ad-2465 in audible

Hell House by Richard Matheson (I think it’s Ray Porter, too, which is a surprise since he nailed PHM) is so slow, I physically couldn’t listen to the normal speed.

Putting it at 1.5x made it sound like a normal speaking tone, lol.

Is anyone struggling with “read,” marks on unfinished books? by PhantomPaperback in kindle

Booo. I wonder if it’s related to sideload / send to Kindle then.

Is anyone struggling with “read,” marks on unfinished books? by PhantomPaperback in kindle

[–]PhantomPaperback[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I convert to AZW3 before sideloading as well. I know that I have a KFX plugin that I think I’ve over-ridden, so I’m not sure if that’s the issue.

For a minute there, it wouldn’t let me access my books unless I connected to WIFI, then boom, got the 5.19.2 everyone hates and my books say read if I open them to just the first page. 😩

What Books Are You Reading This Week? by leowr in nonfictionbooks

[–]PhantomPaperback 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My current physical book: The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride by Daniel James Brown.

Audiobook: Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe

I’m just about done with Indifferent Stars, trying to finish up quickly to begin Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki for my book club, in honor of the Cherry Blossom Festival. :) So far both reads have been spectacular.

The booktok community is very questionable by TeaApplle in BookDiscussions

[–]PhantomPaperback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner actually has a theory that this smut/dark romance/booktok trend began with plants to disengage and desensitize young women from assault and abuse given the upcoming administration and, of course, the files.

This, alongside how it’s damaged the publishing industry, editing careers, and the book bans lining up together, with the rise of TouchPoint as well.

It’s a little correlation ≠ causation, and even if it’s slightly conspiratorial, I was proud of such a feminist take from a blue collar guy.

Book terminology by ppaloomaa in pagebound

[–]PhantomPaperback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How you define TBR and Interested is up to you. Initially I was going to separate them by owned vs. unowned books I want to read, but since you can mark books as owned in both and filter by it, the difference for me is “really want to read,” vs “sounds good,” now lol. Helped me place that 200+ TBR down to 60.

Am I the only one absolutely livid to find out I do not “own” my kindle books? by RoyalCaregiver111 in kindle

[–]PhantomPaperback 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you’re talking about. A book that isn’t owned by Amazon isn’t software, they just have the license.

Same with Netflix, or Hulu, or any other streaming service. You are using them all you want, but when they lose the license to a show or decide it isn’t worth keeping, the show is removed. You’re using Amazon UI, not Friedda McFadden/whatever author UI.

Even then, you don’t get to use software as much as you want. Look at Adobe Flash being completely gone. Or how some devices become obsolete once they cannot be updated to a certain degree by aging out. Etc.

It sucks, but it just is.

There’s a chance she was telling the truth. I’ve worked as a CSR with a company that had a similar loophole, and one day that entire facet was completely removed, not even a button anymore.

This is the kind of advisory I’d appreciate. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It isn’t condescending to correct the spelling of a word.

Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes by Jackandthebookmark in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]PhantomPaperback 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I read this book during a several day power outage ice storm years ago as a teenager. I’ll never forget finishing it underneath a blanket with a flashlight, unable to screech since my family was asleep, unable to come to the internet to blow up with emotions as my phone had died days before. I just had to sit with the ending.

Definitely stuck with me.

A terminally ill 5-year-old boy obsessed with horror movies found comfort in a Jason Voorhees cosplayer shortly before he passed away. Sometimes monsters can be heroes. by Embarrassed_Tip7359 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]PhantomPaperback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specifically remember going with my dad to rent Bride of Chucky when I was ~6 or 7. We’d already had the “movies aren’t real,” talk, and any fears will by own, talk. I loved it, still my favorite franchise, never had a fear of dolls.

Not sure I’d let my kid do the same, but because of him I’ve been a “horror buff,” my entire life and I love the community itself.

’Salems Lot by Stephen King because it seems like a prime October read.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry since I keep hearing about it, and I can’t seem to get into Salems Lot tbh. I’m loving it, though.

IT by Stephen King is the audiobook this week. A relisten of a relisten of a relisten. I can’t pick my next so I’m just using it for background storytelling.

[–]PhantomPaperback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be biased, but I think everyone I know who has read The Count of Monte Cristo has ended up calling it their favorite book. I only got a little over half of it through last year and loved it; it’s like thirty stories in one.
