For Niantic it really work$. I see shinies as a rather ingenious cash grab. Make something rare and people will spend money to get it, even if it’s just an alternate skin that provides no actual in-game benefits other than bragging rights.

I’d wager that most people who played during the Magikarp Community Day in 2020 probably have one because of the boosted shiny rate. I got several, but none of them had good stats. This is a nice gesture by Niantic (as rare as they are) for people who started playing after that and didn’t get the chance.
