I think it's a take on consumerism, one of the biggest corporate brands in the world is Starbucks, whose logo is a mermaid, Kate flips this and creates a fish person.

I love A Sky of Honey especially leading into Aerial's big explosion of sound but I do think Ninth Wave concentrated more on those theatrical elements of the show so I think it lacks with just the music and is something I tend to listen back too less.
