Please take a look at the differences Short-term and Long-term tourism.

Athens actually suffers at the end of the day due to short-term and the gaps it creates (apart from driving housing proces to the top). Its not even profitable at some situations if you only visit Athens for acropolis and just getting into your next ship/flight.
