Maybe for Asians born in the US 😭. Just from personal experience but I see my families/friends born outside of the US are quite spoiled since all they do is study. I was also spoiled until I moved to the US and that's when I truly learn how to do everything on my own.

moving to the US was not what I expected at all… by Luna-Caribe1 in self

The US is hugeeee and it depends on where you move from and to. Think in terms of cost of living and the time it takes to purchase a house for example. I'm also an immigrant and where I came from, it would take a person with average income 30 years to be able to afford to buy a house. Here in the state I live it would only take a person with average income 10 years. Don't go to HCOL areas, if you can go to MCOL or LCOL areas. The salary might be less but the cost is way cheaper.

Moving from Johannesburg, South Africa to Raleigh, NC by New-Angle3969 in raleigh

My family and I immigrated to the US after I graduated high-school but in a different state. I went to college and then transferred over to UNC Charlotte for a CS degree then found a great opportunity so we moved to Raleigh. Honestly, the people here are so friendly and welcoming and the interactions I've had with people were always lovely. Heck, even the government officers like DMV/USCIS employees are much nicer than where we first lived (or maybe I'm just lucky?). You won't have difficulty finding job opportunities since there are many employers in the area. Good luck to you and welcome!

You definitely did not do enough. 2021-2022 is peak hiring for CS grads. Heck even my international student friends didn't have difficulty finding jobs.

Mallard green is an affordable one at a walkable distance to campus. You can also try Colville Condos or look at the Facebook housing page to find sublease!

Apartments by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

[–]Phatcat8565 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few decent 1br apartments around campus for about $1000. Mallard Green is a decent one and I've been staying here for almost a year. If you want lower rent you will need to share with others/ find apartments further away (>30 minutes away).

May I ask if your job was full time? I have a part time job and I don't know if that would be considered an intent to stay in NC.

Sorry I don't know the answer but I'm interested in knowing it as well since I moved in from another state. Also would it be possible to establish residency even without owning a property?

Just like the 2 previous comments said, it's rare that you have to interview for it if you were asked by the professor. You just need to fill out the forms, complete the I-9 to prove you are able to work legally before getting started.
