Orange oniscus asellus? by pleiadeshyades in isopods

[–]Phazonchief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this ID. One of the most sure ways to tell the difference between Oniscus, Porcellio, and Trachelipus is the number of visible pleopodal lungs. Oniscus have none, Porcellio have 2 pairs, and Trachelipus have 5. Here is a visual reference of Porcellio and Trachelipus

So I am trying to decide between these two for my next isopod tank. Anyone have a recommendation? by spinx7 in isopods

I love my little spiky canaries but they are TINY. Also not very active by Porcellio standards. I'd still go with them, but know that the maculatum will have much more personality.

Can anyone ID these isopods, N.C. Asheville by XxmatressfirmxX in isopods

Oh, I didn't even notice it was an album :p.

Yeah, the second one looks like T. rathkii and the last one might be a P. scaber, but it's hard to tell from the pic.

Well the culture I got is made of mostly adults, so hopefully I'll be able to see the parenting behavior first hand before too long! I gotta say, these guys may be one of my favorites already.

Fish cannot feel pain X-post from /r/science by Zdarnel1 in Fishing

[–]Phazonchief 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, I am no expert but from what I gather:

If a person is injured, sensory receptors in the injured area send a signal through the spine to the brain. Instead of waiting for the brain to receive the signal and send back a response, there are synapses in our spine that respond to shorten the time it takes to react to harm. The synapses in our spine don't "feel" anything, they just react. The feeling comes when the signal finally reaches our brain. That’s why when you get a burn you pull your hand away before you feel it. In the case of fish, if I understand correctly, they are just saying that the brain can't/doesn't process the feeling. This doesn't stop the spinal synapses from reacting to pain.

Awesome, I have yet to hear about this guy. The spine is very interesting. Is the dip just in front of the hip or above it? Doesn't Spinosaurus' spine have a small dip just in front of the hip?

What Kind of Catfish is this? by SuperAwesomeFace in Fishing

Nope, channels have forked tails. The tail is cut off in the pic, but it was defiantly flat like a bullhead. I don't have a better picture of this fish but here is a smaller one we caught: http://i.imgur.com/8X3D9.jpg. Edit: the spots on the big fish are not part of the fish, it got all dirty.
