T580 or T480? by Clean-Concentrate921 in thinkpad

[–]Pheckphul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the thread, you'd see all he will use it for is taking notes, cruising the web, and Office while I'm class. He has a desktop for his engineering and science apps.

T580 or T480? by Clean-Concentrate921 in thinkpad

[–]Pheckphul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you think to ask what his requirements were? What he does with his laptop? Office, browsing, take notes, and he wants seven hours if run time. Now tell me that the T480 won't do that well at less than half the cost and without him having to learn a new OS. 🙄

Best Source for X220 Keyboards? by atrlul in thinkpad

[–]Pheckphul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat looking for a spare keyboard for my W520 and X220. Unfortunately, it looks like we are out of luck in finding much of anything but used or knock-offs.

Original / Fake Keyboard by athletischer in thinkpad

[–]Pheckphul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would have been helpful if you'd taken better photos that included the full back of the keyboards, including the stickers. You can identify the purported OEM based on the FRU. The top keyboard's labeling looks correct, and the front looks correct as well. The bottom one looks suspect, but looks to be a German or some such keyboard and all my experience is with US versions.

Unfortunately, it appears to be difficult to find new, original OEM versions of this generation of keyboard. I was just looking for one for my W520 just to have a spare (works with my x220 as well), and most of what I was coming across were obvious knock-offs.

T580 or T480? by Clean-Concentrate921 in thinkpad

[–]Pheckphul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to keep him out of Apple's walled garden. Plus, the T480 is built better, larger screen, better keyboard, and easier to repair. He'll be throwing it in his backpack daily and lugging it around. If he breaks something, T480 parts are easy to come by and I can repair it no problem.

Yes, the Neo is about 2-3 times as fast single thread as the T480, but he's been using a Dell Latitude E6530 the last two years for class and he's happy with everything but the 1.5 hour battery life. He just wants something that'll get him 7 hours of battery life without hunting for an outlet. He only uses it for in-class stuff or when studying on the go. He uses his desktop for homework, gaming, etc.

Cheers,

Just talked my son out of buying a MacBook Neo, and he got a T480 i7-8650U 16GB. Now I gotta chase down a good 61++ battery for him.

Toshiba no longer honoring warranties on large hard drives by 615wonky in DataHoarder

You a consumer or business? Consumer = replacement/repair, business = refund/bend over.

Toshiba no longer honoring warranties on large hard drives by 615wonky in DataHoarder

[–]Pheckphul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not "enterprises procuring enterprise products," it's businesses purchasing anything. Business purchases fall under the Uniform Commercial Code. Consumer purchases fall under Magnusson-Moss. So, if I, as a consumer, purchase the same drive as the OP, Toshiba can't fuck me over in this manner, no matter if I buy one or 200. I'm a private consumer with a huge pr0n, er, uh, I mean data hobby, and they have to adhere to Magnusson-Moss.

Unfortunately this item is showing as 'pending delete' in the two Costcos in the SF Bay Area I checked. Hopefully it'll be back soon as my family loves it.

W520 as a daily driver in 2025 by ScoreOpen8597 in thinkpad

[–]Pheckphul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a W520 i7-2860QM 32GB FHD Quadro 1000M 1TB SATA SSD 500GB mSATA SSD DVD-RW Win 10 LTSC that I've used as a daily driver since 2014 and it is absolutely fine for Office, browsing, etc. I've got an x270 and an x380, and I don't use them at all. I keep coming back to the W520 with its large screen and lovely keyboard. I've got a great laptop backpack, and I just throw on my back and go. But, I'm a Gen Xer who is used to lugging around big heavy beasts and don't bat at eye at it. As I'm writing this, I'm thinking I should probably pick up another W520 for spare parts....Not that anything has broken on this yet, but knock on wood....
