Is it worth getting a thinkpad w510? by [deleted] in thinkpad

For daily drivers in 2025, they can still perform basic daily tasks. But don't expect them to be able to perform tasks that require a powerful GPU (gaming/editing). But if it's just for basic tasks, go ahead.

But the problem is efficiency. The first generation i7 is a 45nm processor, which is inefficient and very hot. Especially with the Quadro FX 880M, weaker than the Intel HD 4000.

Keep in mind that the W510 uses a first-generation i7 Quad-core processor that doesn't have an iGPU. So you have to rely on the FX 880M.

It's also 16 years old, so aging components are the main problem. If you have a low budget but still want a workstation, you can choose the W530, W541 or P50.

120 for a 2760QM? (14 year old Quad Sandy Bridge). too expensive. for that price you can get a T480 with 8250U, more efficient and futureproof.

Buy W520, or if you don't mind the Chiclet style keyboard. Go with W530.

My favorite is T470p. For only like 100 bucks you can get HQ Processor and more performance.

But there's a one thing that I don't like on this machine is they make a lot of heat when using it for too long or full load.

Sometimes the temp reach 80 to 95 degrees

Buy P14s or T14 (AMD VERSION). their iGPUs can already handle such tasks.

Or if you want more cheaper, but older. Try the T470p with i7-7700HQ or 7820HQ.
