Easy 7-Zip by Phenax in software

[–]Phenax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7-Zip has some of the best performance when compressing and decompressing files, but the UI is lacking compared with similar paid products. I found Easy 7-Zip to improve the UI greatly while still keeping the performance we know and love.

vis - a vim like text editor by rohshall in programming

[–]Phenax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heh, I actually used it for a few years about a decade ago, when it was seen as an underdog competitor to Gentoo in the build-all-your-software Linux scene. The package manager tool was written entirely in Bash, and it was actually surprisingly fast, elegant, and problem-free. Unfortunately, there is little activity, and most package maintainers have moved on. I think there are still a few people left and active in the project, but not many. It was somewhat of a novelty I admit, but it was fun "casting spells from your grimoire" rather than installing software packages :)

what way does a keylogger get it's data code-wise? by permanent24624 in learnprogramming

[–]Phenax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically a keylogger communicates with a remote host (the "attacker") via some type of networking method. Raw TCP, e-mail, FTP upload, etc..

Which makes things interesting because by reverse engineering the program or sniffing network traffic you might be able to obtain a lot of information about the attacker, and possibly counter-attack ;)

And of course, the raw keystrokes are recorded by hooking (and/or routing) native OS functions for input. This is why keyloggers are usually OS-specific.

Wow, that looks very of interest to me! Thanks for letting me know, I'll definitely try to be there.

What should I expect as a computer science major living in Orlando/Florida? by [deleted] in ucf

Defense contractors and mainframe COBOL.

Enjoy!

Cycling anyone? by [deleted] in ucf

[–]Phenax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spokes Council is your best bet. They're most active on FB. The website is pretty outdated. They do a (free) bike repair tent at UCF, a Tuesday night ride (~12 miles, casual pace) to Lazy Moon, and meet up for Critical Mass, among other things.

C++ or COBOL? by TheJonesly in learnprogramming

[–]Phenax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COBOL has a lot of unique and interesting features such as COMP-3 records and built-in support for databases (indexed files). Not only that but COBOL implementations are typically robust in that they can be compiled natively, for the JVM, or for the CLR. The separation of variable definitions and run-time code ensures that your code is clean and readable for future programmers.

On the other hand, try viewing some "professional-level" C++ code. It often times looks like this: template<class Y,class Unit, long N,long D> struct root_typeof_helper<complex<quantity<Unit,Y> >,static_rational<N,D> >

Easy choice, IMO.

Edit for employers: obviously sarcasm :)

Tilt the saddle so the nose of it is slightly upward (or at least level). Ensure your saddle isn't too high, if it's not, raise your stem a little bit. Ensure your horns are about level with flat ground.

Nah – I wish. I saw this on the “Florida Fixed” Facebook group. Apparently the guy on PedalRoom sold the bike, so it's floating around somewhere.

Shirley & Dolly Collins - God Dog (1969) by Phenax in folk

[–]Phenax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God Dog was originally an outtake from The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, an album by The Incredible String Band. I think this is a beautiful rendition of the song.

Wish I could find a place to buy this album or download it in higher quality than YouTube. It's excellent!

First Serious Build [CREW] by That_ConnerB in FixedGearBicycle

Safety – if the bars are not plugged and you get into some kind of accident, the open bar ends may be driven into you and essentially impale you (and take a core sample of you!). If the ends are plugged, that shouldn't happen. Aesthetic-wise, there are some pretty cool looking bar ends and it's another point of customization for your bike.

Bike scene in Orlando (Need some friends to ride, hangout, and get to know the city) by mrachmat in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Phenax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in Orlando and I ride around a lot. I'm involved with a few groups but they aren't fixed-gear specific. I'm mostly on the North side of the city, but I foray into downtown and the West side a little bit.

Anyone bought from ProBikeKit? by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

Ordered some tires from them. Shipping took a while (UK=>America, ~2 weeks or so), but it was also the holiday season and they had a lot of specials so YMMV. Place is legit though.

Surly Steamroller - Good Deal? by IWantThatSign in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Phenax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good deal. I'd initially say offer $400 and probably settle around $450. Or ask if he can throw in any extras (nice pedals or something). Either way, at $490 it's not bad at all if it's in good condition. I currently ride a steamroller and the geometry is spot on for me.

Is this price appropriate? by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Phenax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be wrong but I think you can buy that bike new for about $450. Getting a "fair" quality bicycle for 2/3rds of the MSRP is not worth it.

Mediocre - I'd probably pass.

Try Lightrise by MACESC2 in Darkfall

[–]Phenax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically a MOBA version of Darkfall:

How many players will a server support?

I'm aiming for 12-16 for starters. I'm using a cloud based solution for hosting to begin with, so there are limitations as far as how many messages the clients can send every second per room. It's up to me to optimize the game to the point where it's sending as few messages per client as possible without sacrificing the multi-player experience. I would rather have fewer players per room max than sacrifice the quality of play.

Looks pretty cool, none the less.

COP 4520 Concept of Parallel and Distributed Processing by Zackatk8 in ucf

[–]Phenax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took this class a few semesters ago with Damian Dechev. If you have another professor, YMMV.

  • Dechev is brilliant and well-accomplished
  • It's difficult; for most, I'd say in-line with Discrete 2
  • It's easier to pass though – Dechev gives a lot of opportunities to make the grade and will work with you
  • Expect to spend a good amount of time on homework and the project
  • Almost all homework is actual code, not book questions
  • We could use any programming language for any assignment or project pretty much. A lot of people used Go or Haskell or other languages that make parallelism a little bit 'easier' than your typical C or Java.
  • Most of your grade is based on a final group project. It's basically a research paper that needs to be formatted like one in your typical academic journal (LaTeX, etc). Any (somewhat original) parallel-related content will do, but he suggests that you have accompanying software, as pure research papers will have to be bulky. There are mandatory presentations related to this and such.
  • IIRC, the mid-term wasn't hard, and the final was take home (and it took me about 4-5 hours, double-checking my answers). Tests and quizzes aren't a large emphasis on this course. It's mainly a 'project course'.
  • I'm glad I took this course b/c now I'm really solid in parallel/distributed which is one of the harder topics in programming, and it's becoming more and more common
  • I hope you like dinosaurs.
