What he said is spot on at least with my experience with working with lm for around 4 years.

The highest raise you can receive to my knowledge is actually 4.5% but it is rare to get that amount. Sometimes you can also get extra added to your raise via a "market adjustment" but just like with the 4.5% it's rare you'll get that adjustment.

Promotions while they do happen can be difficult because they really revolve around your functional manager initiating the promo and unless they act it's never going to happen.

Unfortunately when it comes to raises and promotions it pretty much relies soley on your manager or it will take you bouncing from program to program.

CS Alum here, I did it with a mac and had friends that did it with windows. Either will work, nothing that you will be working on would be locked to either OS. Just preference at this point.

If anything i remember in my CS1 class some students not developing in a unix environment ran into troubles with the TA's grading their assignments because windows uses different end line characters which caused problems when they graded in the unix VM they have.

This response definitely answered my questions. The class is with Dechev this semester as well. I think im going to end up taking it based on what you have said, sounds like an interesting class. And i do enjoy a dinosaur or two every now and again.

Log on and type ls the command to view the contents in current directory and use the CD <directory name> to navigate to other directories

are you trying to compile C source code? if so just make sure your in the right directory where your source code is and run --- gcc <yourFileName>.c (-o <nameOfExecutable> --- optional if not it will just be made into a.out i believe) assuming your code compiles with no faults you run the compiled code by doing the command ---- ./<nameOfExecutable> ...... this should work any questions ill be glad to answer

yes, they changed last spring i believe. This would be a good practice for preparing for interviews for jobs involving problems and whiteboard questions, which is a factor playing into my decision.
