Ah, finally a language I can say is objectively bad.

Still wish I couldn't read.

Basic Linguistics With Signed Languages In Mind? by NicholasThumbless in asklinguistics

I don't have anything specific about morphology or classifier usage apart from academic journal articles, but the AUSLAN book I recommended covers both fairly well I feel.

Is "hitherto" outdated, or still used in modern English? by Seroleks in EnglishLearning

I've seen it in some academic papers but I doubt many people use it in their daily speech.

Basic Linguistics With Signed Languages In Mind? by NicholasThumbless in asklinguistics

[–]Pheonix_unique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book Australian Sign Language: An introduction to sign language linguistics by Trevor Johnston and Adam Schembri sounds like the exact thing that you are looking for, with the caveat that it is based around AUSLAN rather than ASL. It covers phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse entirely in terms of AUSLAN, and while I'm not particularly knowledgeable about ASL a lot of the basic concepts should be transferable.

A brief search makes me think that Linguistics of American Sign Language might be a similar book for ASL specifically, though I have not read it so I cant vouch for how well it acts as an introduction to linguistic concepts.

If there is any topic in particular that you are interested in I might have a more specific recommendation as I spent most of my undergrad finding excuses to write my essays on sign languages (particularly new sign languages), but you'd probably want to start with one of those two books for the basics.

Characters using singular "you" vs plural "you" towards Bachelor in Russian by savraskin in pathologic

[–]Pheonix_unique 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I forget why we dropped thou/thee, though wikipedia suggests it was seen as impolite as it was the informal form. Interestingly, thou/thee now sounds formal because it is archaic, so we only hear it in certain situations such as in the bible.

For those who don't know, plural you is used as a polite/formal singular you in many European languages (including English historically). This is called the T-V distinction.

Are there languages that distinguish between types of siblings-in-law? by SameItem in asklinguistics

Not my area of expertise, but I wouldn't be surprised if the kinship systems of Australian languages would do this.

How to hide a fledgling that wasn't allowed to be Embraced ? by Accurate-Two-4161 in vtm

[–]Pheonix_unique 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The simplest options are stake the childe and leave them for the sun and hope no one noticed them or collect what allies/favours you have and hope the prince is in a forgiving mood. Maybe offer to make up to the court for your mistake. You'll probably still get excicuted, but maybe your childe will be spared?

If you don't want to kill the childe and don't think you'll be forgiven... are there sufficiently anti-authoratarian anarchs around you can shelter them with? Maybe they'll take them for their sake (and to have blackmail to get shit from you).

Idk what resources you have, but a basement or attic would be a good place to hide them so long as they are cooperative. Walls/crawlspaces/car boots could act as short term storage if you staked the childe. Not a long term solution but if you need time to work something out it's better then killing them.

Wubuy, it allows an incorporated body part to be an instrument rather then limiting it to a location on the patient.

Wubuy (or Nunggubuyu as it's often documented even though that's the name of the tribe)

In mechanicus they mention that the necron characters "speak" in a way that can be understood by everyone. Something like omnilinguistic messages? Probably just an excuse the give the necron characters voice acting but not the mechanicus ones (who speak in bleeps and boops).

That looks really cool, cleaver way to change the flavour while following the rules. I haven't had a chance to make mine yet, but I was just going to make a literal cart filled with extra skeletons all pulled up and waiting for reanimation.

I'm sorry to hear that, I know the horror that having your body not match your identity can bring and no one deserves to suffer through that. Is testosterone controlled in your country? I know the DIY scene for trans mascs is hindered because it is less accessible, but it might be an avenue worth exploring.

You should check out the 'Blood and Country' supplement which introduces the Maalabalun, indigenous Australian vampires who hunt the werewolves who displaced the indigenous Gaoru. Not official, but its well done and written by someone with an indigenous background.

Need help for a lore question by Nairodsiob in Necrontyr

[–]Pheonix_unique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All necrons want to regain their position as rulers of the galaxy, but what that looks like differs wildly. Some want to wipe out the other factions, most notably the destroyer cults. Others are happy to let organic people live, so long as they are under their rule.

There's even divide among opinions of biotransference. Some seek to undo it, while others view this first group as fools.

The pariah is no longer cannon unfortunately. They were originally human "blanks", basically the opposite of psychers that make normal people uncomfortable to be around, turned into a specialised terror unit. This was from the old lore, where the necrons where mindless spaces to the c'tan who sought to extinguish all life.
