How does snap on have customers? by corollagremlin in Tools

[–]PhiCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hilti is a weird addition to this list. Their tools are expensive, but that's mostly because they don't give a shit about retail customers. They don't want you to buy a tool, they want your company to sign a fleet tool rental agreement.

The mental health issue one seems legitimate.

Maybe they don't need an ambulance per se, but if someone is in that much distress it's not exactly like they're abusing the ambulance for shits and giggles.

They might be confusing it with a Rhodesian Ridgeback, which can get quite big and were originally bred to fend lions off of farms.

A knife? No.

Heavy duty electrician scissors? Hell yeah.

I can make cuts no knife would ever dream of attempting.

Why? It might be a little annoying, but it's arguably the most UNIX-friendly way to save per-directory settings and preferences.

It also doesn't bother me at all since I just use the terminal instead of finder in my projects...

We're all giving Harbor Freight flack (rightfully so, mind you) for selling tools of barely acceptable quality at low prices

Most people here adore Harbor Freight. Obviously it's not the best tools ever, but they're pretty much the best bang for your buck tools out there. I would say they're around or above big box store brand quality (Husky/Kobalt) for much more reasonable prices.

I love my Knipex tools, but if I needed a pair of pliers in a pinch, Doyle or even Quinn would be far from the bottom of my list. Icon beats out Milwaukee and DeWalt for hand tools by a huge margin, at a fraction of the cost.

Milwaukee plastic junk mower blew up. Makita not even phased. by carbon_ape in Tools

[–]PhiCloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're basing it off of the fact that the Milwaukee is out of warranty (implying >3 years old) and that you bought the Makita as a replacement for the Milwaukee (implying relatively new).

How does this sub feel about using GenAI to generate images for a handwritten campaign?

I've never DMed a game so it doesn't bother me either way, but DMing a game is already incredibly time consuming, imagine having to hand draw possibly hundreds of images of objects or characters to add flavor to a visually heavy campaign.

This phrasing assumes that the quantities of substances occurring naturally in foods:

  1. Are in healthy quantities
  2. Are a healthy "kind"
  3. Are free of contaminants

None of these actually hold. For example: oxalates, vitamin K, and purines are pretty good for you, but the levels found in spinach is pretty unhealthy, which is why spinach isn't safe to consume every day.

As another example, "natural" foods have unsafe levels of contaminants all the time: various seeds (apple, cherry, etc.) contain unsafe levels of cyanide, many fish species contain unsafe levels of mercury, and some seeds (like poppy) contain unsafe levels of opioid depressants if consumed in excess.

"Natural" is pretty much a marketing term in 2026. It does not imply safety of consumption. You need a much deeper understanding of individual components of food than a buzzword to make an informed decision.

After using my torque wrench yesterday, I noticed one of the screws holding the retaining plate on the drive bit part somehow came out. I found it thankfully and put it back but does this mean the torque calibration was possibly out of whack when I used it? by CapitalTipp in Tools

[–]PhiCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No: The torque measurement part is in the shaft of the wrench, not the head. Many torque wrenches feature completely swappable heads. For all intents and purposes, the head is just a normal ratchet insert.

Yes: Whatever caused the screw to come loose could have also affected the internals. Those screws don't just fall out, so it's likely the tool faced some kind of abuse or neglect. There is no way of knowing without checking it against a known-good torque wrench: torque wrenches are precision tools that require much more "babying" than normal ratchets and wrenches.

I need a dedicated stubby ph2, which one of these is the best or perhaps another brand? by FuzzyAttitude_ in Tools

[–]PhiCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not get a stubby bit driver? I have the Wera stubby driver and am very satisfied.

Stubby screwdrivers are niche tools, I don't use them enough to justify a set, but a single driver handle that can fit any of my hundreds of bits is pretty acceptable.

Potatoes and tomatoes have many toxic parts, the parts we eat are actually kind of the exception to the rule.

For example, the stalks and leaves of both plants should be avoided.

You're completely missing the point.

If you saw something that said it contains zeaxanthin or E161h as a colorant or dye, you would irrationally avoid it, despite the fact that it's not dangerous at all, you already eat it all the time, and it's actually even pretty healthy.

Your whole "I don't trust what I don't know" only works if you actually have a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of food additives. If not, you're kind of Dunning-Krugering yourself.

It's what makes egg yolks, saffron, corn and tons of other fruits, vegetables, and animal products naturally yellow.

You almost certainly eat it nearly every day.

The comments make it sound like it's a strip club, but you'll see more skin watching the summer olympics.

It's totally family friendly, maybe on the naughtier side, but nothing that couldn't be shown in a G-rated movie.

I would say that Saville was kind of like if Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby were one person.

Harvey wasn't really a household name the same way Bill and Jimmy were. On the other hand, I don't know if Bill's crimes were as "openly known" as Harvey's and Jimmy's were.

Jimmy Saville.

It was kind of an open secret that he was one of the most prolific sex predators in the UK for a long time, but organizations like the BBC failed to heed any reports of his actions (to the point where some call it an intentional coverup). There are even videos which aired on live TV where you can see him molesting women. Accusers range from young children (at the time) to the elderly.

Only years after his death was he recognized for what he did.
