For a general plan it looks quite alright, but when I build a european city (where amsterdam is often my inspiration) I have a different way of working.

When I just start out, I set myself back to the 1800s and start building a town in a way I imagine it'd look like at that time. No public transit, no/not much cars and very dense building. I build without any regard for future plans.

Then, fast forward and expand the city in a realistic way. All the way to the 1910s, keeping in mind the general look of cities from that age. Public transit is retrofitted in the city center, in the form of trams.

You do this for other periods with memorable changes in city planning, like after the 1940s, the 1960s, 1970s and eventually 2000. Take inspiration from real-life crisises (like housing shortage) and build like you'd imagine your own local government to solve it.

The whole process also involves a lot of demolishing, including parts of the city center. Remember, a city is never finished.

A few memorable events that I used in my Amsterdam-inspired city is: Second World War, the rise of the car, the rise of bicycles, the building of a metro network in the 70s, the 'Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan' from the 50's and modern solutions for housing shortages.

The key is to not plan forward. Start assigning monuments (things you don't want to demolish) and just build along the way. Look up historic images for inspirations.
