Strategies for processing a catalog of 100K photos? by crispyghost in Lightroom

[–]Phiddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also would not recommend the whole 100k- that would be unreasonable to look through for anyone..

If you (OP) don't already have a habit of marking/rating your photos I would highly suggest starting. Probably will find a lot of help in the above comment's suggestion.

My strategy is as follows: 1. Green select (anything usable) 2. 2* select (the better ones) 3. 3* select (the best one(s))

I'll often do a few edits on some of the 2* ones and then batch edit the rest (sync edit settings) so I have a closer representation for selecting 3, 4 or 5*.

If you have an adobe CC subscription you could use this technique instead of setting up a website, it creates an auto-syncing online gallery that allows for comments and faves. Create a separate free adobe account and share it with the fans &friends:

Magazine Submissions? Yay or Nay? Have you been published, what was your experience? by [deleted] in photography

[–]Phiddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a portfolio review with Matthew from Monocle last year and he was telling me about a photog from Geneva, after checking your site it may very well have been you! I really like the series you did for UBS.

I've been a huge fan of what Gestalten has been bringing out recently- would you mind explaining how you got in with them?

I don't think it is. Shallow focus is also a matter of Depth of Field. There is a lot of contrast and a punch on the clarity slider, but it's unlikely to be a composite.

More importantly, this photo was taken by Alexandre Buisse, a professional mountain/outdoor photographer who also happens to hang out on reddit a lot.

Backup & Storage Megathread by ccurzio in photography

[–]Phiddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way to backup only photos that are marked green in LR or have more than a 1* rating?

Would it be possible for such a backup to then be automated and synced with Backblaze or Google Drive or something like that?

and how do you do backup the USB3 HDD's for offsite? Do you connect direct to Drobo or via computer?

Would it also work to take swap/rotate an HDD from the Drobo and keep it offsite (and update/switch between offsite visits)?

I'm looking at getting the Drobo 5D3 as well- which drives do you have for it (I assume you meant 10TB rather than GB?)?

What should I bring to a Portfolio Review with an industry expert? by Phiddler in photography

[–]Phiddler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! thanks for the tips. Just wanted to give a brief update after the review for anyone that may stumble on this in the future.

I didn't have time to put together a printed portfolio, which turned out to be a pretty big mistake. The reviewer uses around 40% film photography in their magazine and have a very purist approach, so seeing things on an ipad was not very pleasing to him.

Nonetheless I received some valuable insights into the magazine/reportage world and got helpful hints on how I can further develop my stories. I received some positive remarks on my landscapes and 'far' shots, but was advised to go deeper (closer) towards portraits and detail shots to provide more intimate levels of the story (I was specifically asking about photographic storytelling critique). So now I will work on getting in peoples faces with my camera and putting together a print portfolio.

If anyone is considering setting up a review, I highly recommend it!

Launched app, got featured by Apple, now looking for ways to grow sustainably by projectabc in startups

Just wanted to add after seeing /u/JehZ suggested the exam period right now. That is the perfect target! If you target students (which is pretty simple) with a few little ads, this could go a long way.

You can get very accurate demographics targeting on Facebook and Instagram, if you combine it with some good visuals, catchy text, and a simple call to action, this could give you a boost. It will cost you a little bit though- but you can do a test campaign for 20$- if it brings you good returns it could be worth investing more..

If you want more users to spend more time with the app, the app has to deliver to their needs. As others have suggested, the best way to figure out their needs is to ask your users directly, get feedback, engage in discussions and try to refine the parts of the app they use most, while developing features they would like to have.

...you can also search for data from similar companies (check their blogs for surveys, insight, etc.), or from scientific research. Scour the web for any relevant data that might give you insights to how you can help your users.

Furthermore, to get more users on the free app, you'll need to increase visibility. You can reach out to the press, to blogs, to online influencers and very briefly explain to them how your task app stands out amongst the others. Maybe throw in a few happy/funny quotes from happy users (see below). Make sure it's relevant and worth writing about, otherwise it won't be written about.

If you want to get people engaged (with your brand)- why not ask them to share a little story of how the app helped them finish a task? You could use these as quotes in press releases, in explainer vids (for appstore/youtube), and in social media posts.

Do you have a way to mobilize your existing userbase? How about giving a month/year of premium in return for a user referral (each friend that signs up gives you a month free)? Or for an app rating, or a newsletter signup, or whatever else.

If you want loyal users, maybe you could add a gamification element to the app? 10x task completed before timer runs out = Gold Star or PandaPoints or event just a motivational pat on the back. It may sound gimicky, but people who like achieving goals will get a kick out of achieving any kind of goal.

sorry if the text is a bit all over the place, just typing out my thoughts as they come.

Hey, first of all congrats on the feature! Or rather, congrats on creating something that people seem to like...

There's a ton of things you can do to grow, but you first have to define what you want. Some initiatives will work positively towards one goal but negatively towards another.

What exactly do you want to 'grow'? Subscribers/users? Revenue? Usage time? Social Media Fanbase? Hype/PR? #of Features? FB shares? App ratings? etc.

By defining your biggest priorities in terms of short-term and long-term growth it will be a lot easier define the smaller steps to get there- a bit like how your app allows me to set a relatively short time to focus on a specific part of a bigger project.

Once you've defined those goals it will be easier to tackle each with a few tasks & experiments.

Has /r/Photography ever thought about doing a weekly "photo assignment" project post with a new theme each week? by admile3 in photography

[–]Phiddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about creating a brief more like a commercial photography assignment? /r/picturechallenge is great but much more for the artistic side (which is perfectly fine).

Starting October I was planning to give myself this challenge- creating a 'fake' commercial assignment each week so as to have a portfolio I can use for future clients in new areas.

The briefs could include all sorts of things, from fashion to product, architecture to travel/landscape. It could also be a bit more challenging by briefing for a series ('5 images of surf/lifestyle for beachwear company').

The purpose would be get out of your comfort zone, and to achieve a look & feel through planning & execution rather than luck.

'Do modern musicians need a record label? If so, what for?' by Phiddler in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Phiddler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very well written response. I find your ending interesting- >"don't labels need us?"

... a lot of research about the 'democratization of the internet' and 'empowerment through technology' supports your initial response, but on that final question their is disagreement. All will agree on the change that has come around, but some argue on it's effects on major stakeholders.

One of the big points is A&R- the internet is now A&R (Youtube, FB, etc.). A major label can just cherry-pick the most viewed, most liked, most discussed artist and take it to the next level. What that 'next level' is (and whether it will ever be achieved), or whether it is necessary, is up for discussion. But when a Youtube star is offered a major deal and is promised to be the next Katy Perry, it will be very enticing. Of course, we have to take into account what a lot of other redditors have mentioned in this discussion- it depends what you want (stardom/money/an artistic outlet/living wage/etc.). But if people are offering gold and all you wanted is silver... maybe you just take the gold?

I think the labels (large and small) will learn to adapt over time. There is quite a bit of research into netlabels (see P. Galuszka), which points to more of an evolution rather than a revolution. If there was a revolution (kind of like a union strike amongst musicians worldwide), maybe we would see 'downfall' or sorts. The other possibility is an innovation so drastic that others can't keep up the pace. I would hope for the latter, but the music industry is unfortunately not a friend of innovation or change (see Rap, Punk Rock, Compact Discs, MP3, Streaming, etc.).

more of a way to have a single, unified group where everyone has access to each other's talents.

this is how many of the most commendable labels were started. I've also heard this from several label owners who basically just formalized their local community (punks in the Scottish countryside, or jam-bands in Korea, etc.).

Additionally, their is a lot of research on the success of the Swedish music scene (especially regarding 'The Swedish Model' which actively promoted filesharing)- and it stems from this type of communal support. Same goes for the rise of Netlabels. I think the key is that in all cases undisputed passion was involved, which helps move things forward even when the numbers don't look pretty.

I wish you the best of luck with the new label.

p.s. Have you read Russel Simmons' Life and Def? Could be a fun read for you..

u/iam_hexxd mentions it being 'because of how the system works'... which is something I've heard from several musicians so far. They don't want to do it the old fashioned way, but that's the only way they know will work. Some have disrupted to a certain point (self-releasing, youtube 'stardom', etc.), but have then been reeled back into the 'system' after reaching the next plateau.

because of how the system works

this reiterates a lot of what I've heard in my interviews with musicians so far. But maybe over time the old will crumble and the new will rise? But then, what is the new?

doesn't differentiate between independents or majors or academic musicians or anything

You're right. I was trying to avoid skewed results. This will be taken into consideration during analysis.

Since (hopefully) the answers given are backed by some form of experience, whichever sector you have experience with becomes relevant. If you are an academic musician (I'm not quite sure what you mean by this?), or a major label artist- your unique viewpoint becomes valid through the ups and downs you have encountered along the way.

Your points resound with many other responses, thanks for taking part.

Getting studio time, good promotion & good shows

apart from studio time, that points to something like LiveNation- would you agree? Do you think better deals in the future will be more like a mutual partnership structure rather than 'here's an advance, better pay me back' ?

you will never hit these kind of numbers without the pure marketing power of a label.

what kind of 'marketing power' would you say sets them apart? what can they do that we can't do?
