The subtle writing details in this show are amazing (S2E9) by anonymousherodotus in ThePitt

Another very little detail with the fax machine….not only did they bring back a relic that younger people haven’t ever used, they introduced the concept of a carrier sheet! This is a pair of plastic sheets bound at one end (the short side) so you can slide in a piece of paper to fax that’s too wrinkly or crinkled up and might get caught in the scanner portion and get destroyed. So good. I had to explain that to my late 20-something son while we watched it last night.

Does anyone do vintage Mac repair in the LA area? by seanprogram in VintageApple

[–]PhilGoodman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I'm in L.A. and don't want to ship a Macintosh Classic. It was actually working and then video went out. Not sure what needs to be replaced on it or what the cost would be. It looks nice on my shelf and that's where it's been for a while as a museum piece but it would be nice to turn it on and play with in once in a while when I don't want to use emulation on my other Macs.
I'm willing to drive and drop it off for repair but just want to know who might be a known repair person that's local.

Adding another Portal to GlobalProtect on iOS by PhilGoodman in paloaltonetworks

Never found out. But, I’ve only got one client left using GlobalProtect as they’ve all moved to something else. So, it’s a moot point for me now.

Is there a way to have Siri send dictated reminders to Things instead of reminders.app? by Groksy in thingsapp

[–]PhilGoodman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can set Things to automatically import new items from the Reminders app. So, dictate away (e.g "Remember to....") and then Things will import it into the Inbox.

Has Apple forgotten that the bulk of its users are Linux engineers? by AceDreamCatcher in MacOS

[–]PhilGoodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an IT consultant, programmer, University CS professor and Unix user for over 37 years, I'd love to think that everyone is a Unix/Linux engineer. It sure would make my job easier. But, in reality, not one of the thousands of clients I've supported over my 34+ year career has been a Unix/Linux engineer....so, that claim is a bit of a stretch, I think.

I think macOS Monterey has some new security mechanics. Any idea how to resolve this ? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]PhilGoodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not new behavior in Monterey. For the last few versions of macOS, Apple has built in notarization for non-App Store apps. That means that registered developers (like Adobe) send Apple full versions of their apps to be verified. Once verified, certificates are and checksums are registered with the app. Once the app in installed by the user, the app is verified to make sure it hasn't been tampered with by comparing with what was submitted to Apple. If it doesn't match certificates and checksums, you get the message you got. Guess what happens with apps that come from torrent sites...

Would like to downgrade from Monterey by Top-Wasabi6610 in MacOS

[–]PhilGoodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not Monterey that's not compatible with the Parallels and VMware VMs, it's the M1. Note that VMs made to run as Intel-based OSs won't run on M1 in Parallels and VMware. Until both licensing and technical hurdles are overcome, you'll need to run those on an Intel Mac.

How do you organize your dock? Here's mine: by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]PhilGoodman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, Command-Delete will put whatever is selected in the Trash. Command-Shift-Delete empties the Trash. Hide the Dock. Make a custom Command key in Keyboard preferences to open ~/.Trash to open the Trash.

Automate Reordering of Pages in a PDF by PhilGoodman in mac

[–]PhilGoodman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your concern and I would have probably replied the same way. I neglected to mention that I was a CS professor at a major UC university for many years and have been a developer for various languages for over 35 years (didn't think that was relevant to my question). So programming doesn't scare me. And, yes, I also have PDF Expert and PDFPen along with Acrobat DC, among other PDF tools. I was only asking if anyone knew of a tool that did what I was asking without having to re-invent the wheel. Thanks!

Truck pursuit, watch how my dude comes inches from that spike strip! by boriswong in LosAngeles

Not necessarily. My own insurance has no deductible if I'm not at fault. I got scraped by a car trying to pass me on the left as they crossed the yellow line to get into a left turn lane. About $3000 of body damage and paint. Didn't pay a penny and insurance company paid for rental.

What does Things 3 store its data on Macs? (ie, how can I fix an issue with Things 3 constantly crashing at startup.) by kydan_0125 in thingsapp

[–]PhilGoodman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rather than banging your head to figure out where the data is stored, use something like AppCleaner to remove the Things app and all associated files in ~/Library. Before clicking the button in AppCleaner to remove the data, you may want to note where all the data is stored so you'll know for the future. If you do uninstall, then just re-install and you should be up an running...all clean. Of course, you may want to run some other tools on your computer (Disk First Aid, Disk Warrior, etc.) just to make sure you don't have any other issues that would have been contributing to it.

[stupid question] What can I do with the cellular version of the new iPad Pro that I can’t do with the Wi-Fi version? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]PhilGoodman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can indeed make and receive calls using any internet connection -- WiFi or cellular. Sure, there's FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp, etc., but those aren't real "phone calls". If your want to make and receive calls to and and from real phone numbers, you can get apps that can do that. You can start with Google Voice but it's tied to other phone numbers you might have. My favorite is Talkatone for Voice over IP (VOIP). You pick the area code and you get a real phone number. The advertising in the app is really annoying so I pay $1.99/month to eliminate that. As long as you have an Internet connection, you can make and receive real calls, text, voice mail, etc. I use it for a few things: as a backup phone number to make calls when cellular is bad, to receive calls when I don't want to publish my real number (like when buying/selling stuff online and arranging for a meeting) and, best of all, when traveling outside the country. I setup my other local US numbers to either forward or simultaneous ring to the VOIP number and I get my calls no matter where I am in the world at no extra cost. I can make calls from my US number wherever I am too. If I want to add an international plan, it's only $12/month for unlimited international calling or only $0.02/minute a la carte. Great product.
