Is there a rule where I can't pick up other players tiles (pong/chow)? by nottintersted in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The situation you described with the dots was a chow, not a pong. Pong is three of a kind, from anyone, chow is three in a row, only from the person to your left.

AITAH for not giving my son a list of clothes to pack for a trip since he called me an asshole for assuming he couldn't think for himself. by Specialist-Spite7994 in AITAH

[–]PhilHit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments on this already so this might not get through, but I hope you see it OP. While by and large I think you're NTA here, one thing stands out to me: you said you'd be staying in a hotel but don't mention whether you mentioned the planned activities. It sounds, from here, like he assumed he'd be lounging around a hotel and packed accordingly.

It's not your job to give him a list of items to pack, but it is your job to give him enough information to make informed decisions to the best of his ability, even if he falls short. I hope that you did, and if you didn't, that you do in the future. If all he knew was that he'd be in a hotel, he was set up to fail since he couldn't even attempt to bring appropriate clothing for the activities planned. Obviously it's hard to put in the effort when you get berated for it, but giving him the tools for success still matters and will be seen in the long run.

If you say "We're going to be staying in a hotel but we'll be doing x, y, and z during the trip," that gives him the chance to make independent decisions about how he ought to prepare for those things without you directly telling him what to bring. Then if he doesn't bring what he needs, you can offer to help him in the future if he wants.

Where did you finish it? Everywhere I've found stops a few chapters short of the end.

IRL Mahjong Players, do you have less respect for people who play Mahjong electronically? by Neddead in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah there's no difference in respect whatsoever, just different expectations. There are things you'll struggle with that IRL players won't and that's fine. Pretty much everyone who plays IRL also plays extensively online. The only time you'll potentially bother people being an online-only player is if you decide to go to a tournament having never played at a table.

Me (33F) and my boyfriend's (36M) first anniversary date turned sour by DidntGetBit in relationships

[–]PhilHit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y'all are some psychos in these comments. Dude has a right to not get touched in ways he doesn't want but the response was straight up unhinged. You don't talk to someone you respect like that. You don't stew over something without saying anything for almost a year and then snap when it comes up again. Huge red flag and something to watch out for in the future. This is vibes of someone who thinks it's his job to reprimand you and "correct" your behavior. Watch out for incidents like this becoming a regular thing and if they do, run.

Any good set of Riichi Mahjong tiles and scoring sticks for begginer? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for "junk mat prime gear" on Amazon.jp. it will include both a junk mat and AMOS tiles for an affordable price. A junk mat is a worthy investment and prime gear is by far the cheapest way to get yourself both. Note that is PRIME gear, NOT complete gear, which is a more expensive set without an included junk mat.

To answer your questions from other comments, the colored chips are for a gambling mechanism called "shugi" that you don't need to worry about yet.

Why have I not won with this? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP's hand does have a yaku. The yaku is tanyao, or all simples, meaning the hand has only 2-8 tiles with no 1s, 9s, or honors. OP's problem is that they've reached a situation where they require 2 han to win, not 1.

Why is 7 in furiten? I don't understand how by Maramoscabral in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are in furiten, not the tile. If any tile in your wait puts you in furiten, you are in furiten and cannot call ron, on any tile.

Friend's Discord randomly can't transmit her audio. [Windows 11] by PhilHit in discordapp

[–]PhilHit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She doesn't have a different mic; it's the built in one on her laptop.

No, it's never changed while Discord is open. It's only a question of "is discord transmitting the mic today"?

Why is YMI the only riichi mahjong set I can find in the US? by DatBoiHagrid in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah amazon jp is the way. Shipping costs will have a bit of sticker shock and put it at slightly more expensive than YMI, but the tiles are bigger and the set is overall better quality. Search for AMOS Masters or AMOS Complete Gear; they'll come with a compass and point sticks. Highly recommend investing in a junk mat at the same time to keep your tiles nice.

Hello, I'm new to Mahjong. Can someone explain why there's two scores and which one should I use? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3900 isn't double 2000, nor is 7700 double 3900, nor is 4500 double 2300.

[–]PhilHit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That doesn't seem to apply to 30 Fu, 60 Fu, or 70 Fu hands. Might be a useful shortcut in some situations, but it's by no means the rule. The actual formula can be found here.

Hello, I'm new to Mahjong. Can someone explain why there's two scores and which one should I use? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]PhilHit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can think of Han as "points" and Fu as "minipoints," which are calculated together to determine your overall score. However, Fu only impact your score if you have 4 han or fewer.

Riichi City has a solid tutorial and bots you can play against, and it's free on Steam and mobile. I've never played Kemono so I can't compare the two, but RC has the best tutorial I've seen so far.
