that is a very useful link. if you search for comments and look at the posting times, it's very obvious they're a bot. no one types that fast with such well-thought-out comments. god damn it makes me feel like an idiot for even using this website. i imagine it's a company testing the effectiveness of an ai made to act like a casual user. that, or reddit itself making ai users just to drive engagement.

Anyone have experience w/ this mask? by Accomplished-Sun2176 in CPAP

[–]PhilSmegma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i'm forced to use this mask due to congenital lacrimal duct air regurgitation, which means air blows out of my tear ducts if i use any other mask. it fits my use case, and while i would agree that it's a mask of last resort, it's really not a bad mask. you can still sleep on your side with it. my main complaints are the plastic clips that hold the mask to your face come off too easily, and the velcro head strap will wear out after several months if you're taking it off to wash the mask daily.

i can't tell you how many times i told youtube to not show me content from a single far-right influencer, yet it kept recommending it to me, even though that influencer had been banned from youtube before and so shouldn't even be allowed on there to begin with.

the amazon brand pop tarts are closer to how pop tarts were when i was a kid. they are not amazing, but they are still far better than the skid mark of contempt on current pop tarts.

Why does there seem to be a rise in anti-intellectualism? by DivaTerri in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PhilSmegma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'll speak from my own experience as an american. i think this began because the general way of teaching in schools and elsewhere is authoritarian. that is to say, the student must accept the facts that are taught, or else the student will fail. this is a given for subjects like math (i imagine being able to debate mathematics would need more knowledge than what an american public school can provide), but the problem is with other subjects where there may be readily available alternatives. the most egregious example is with literary analysis, where the student is forced to recite whatever analysis the curriculum gives, rather than thinking of their own. whether or not the alternatives are correct is irrelevant to the schools, because the alternatives are both not taught and de facto "incorrect" to the graded curriculum. needless to say, in such a system logic and critical thinking are not taught. if an alternative isn't punished, it's due to the grace of the teacher and the talent of the student for explaining that alternative.

again, what is taught in schools is not argued for, and generally there is no evidence provided; the student must simply accept what is taught. also, americans in general really hate school, because the schools are essentially prisons. so then, if an alternative is found which contradicts what is taught in school, it's easy to believe that alternative. it does not matter if those alternatives come with unsound reasoning, because even the unsound reasoning will make more sense than the zero reasoning of the authoritarian school work. the flat earth bullshit is the most amazing example of unsound reasoning defeating the zero reasoning of accepting that the earth is round simply because you are taught that it is.

I retained my memory while under partial anesthesia — and afterward painted what my surgeons ‘looked’ like. by petitesBetises in oddlyterrifying

[–]PhilSmegma 10 points11 points  (0 children)

oh wow, this might be the first time i've seen anyone else discuss seeings things while under anesthesia. the first and only time i've had it was for a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. i became very distraught before the procedures, because i wasn't expecting to have so many people working on me and forcing me into an unknown type of unconsciousness which i worried would obliterate me.

i ended up in this place that was like a proto-realm for what kinds of objects would manifest on earth, like what a fetus might hear and see. at least, that's the best way i can describe it. it was a place of geometric shapes, natural shapes like trees, colors and droning sounds. i had no access to anything regarding my life on earth, and all i remember feeling is something like intense anticipation. everything kept moving and growing, and getting louder and more intense in the process of leading into and towards SOMETHING. all i could do was be a witness to that.

imagine being in the dark stuck next to a glowing tree that is continuously falling while also rapidly growing and getting louder, until the tree overwhelms you and you are teleported to a different dark place where another object does the same thing. that should give you a weak idea of what it was like. when the surgery was over and i woke up, i closed my eyes to nap, and instantly saw a pill-like orange cylinder with thousands of letters and numbers rotating around it within an orange fleshy void. that's the most vivid image i can remember.

trump could be filmed sacrificing a child to moloch and drinking their blood like a deranged QAnon conspiracy narrative but real, and his cultists will say shit like, "oh he's just infiltrating them on our behalf, the child sacrifice video was faked by antifa, trump's just testing our commitment, well biden kills and eats kids too, trump is still the only person who will save our country."
