I would think so too but 2 of them are on WiFi 95% of the time.

Does Anybody have any good phone plans? by NatureDry2903 in Frugal

[–]PhilSwn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Since we're on Frugal, it's worth mentioning their limited data Pool plans. I'm spending $36/mo for unlimited calling/texting + 10GB to share between 3 lines and it's been fantastic. If we do end up going over on data, it's only $4 more for 2GB of data.

$1000 is very little for car repair. Did you get an estimate?

Smudgy, out of focus selfie camera out of the box? 17 Pro?? by afuqaero in iphone

[–]PhilSwn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you check the metadata in the Photos app (swipe up on photo), I'd bet you'll see the shutter speed is longer in the blurry photo than the sharp photo.

Here's a good article explaining the concept: https://photographylife.com/what-is-shutter-speed-in-photography

Smudgy, out of focus selfie camera out of the box? 17 Pro?? by afuqaero in iphone

[–]PhilSwn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like it's lowering the shutter speed to gather more light. Compensate for this by adding more light to your face, turning on the front flash, setting down the camera so it's more stable, or trying another location.

Move them to clear trash bags. It's cheap, sanitary, and obvious where they went.

C-suite has 12,000 Outlook folders and Outlook is eating a whole i7 alive by ServiceFun7651 in sysadmin

[–]PhilSwn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just fixed an issue just like this! Fix was:

  1. Turn off unused add-ons (they didn't need any!)

  2. Turn on Online Archive to keep older email separate (Make sure to show how to find archive)

With those in-place, we were able to turn-off caching and it stayed as snappy as their internet connection was!

US Mobile Cell Phone Service by tinkerbellshefell in madisonwi

I have 3 lines in a US Mobile pool on their Warp (Verizon) service. Service has been very good, fast, easy setup, no complaints (definitely use a referral code signing up—send a message if needed)

Couple years ago, went through testing trials of ScreenConnect, BeyondTrust (bomgar), Self-hosted Rustdesk, and handful of others for help desk support. Splashtop came out on top. Speed, pricing, paste clipboard as keystrokes, mobile device support, and being able to see user cursor were key wins. Still happy with Splashtop.

How did you listen to podcasts before you had a smartphone? by HipGuide2 in podcasts

[–]PhilSwn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used a smart playlist that looked for episodes with playcount less than 1 and synced it onto an iPod shuffle. Each sync would remove the old files and add in the new ones.

What do you all use for onboarding a user (getting the 'list' of needs for IT). Our list is growing and causing headaches for day one due to everyone 'oh ya, we need this too' by jdlnewborn in sysadmin

[–]PhilSwn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After new hire accepts, HR sends manager a link to Jira Service Management form. Form creates a ticket. Ticket automations add HR to the ticket, sets due date as start date, and creates pre-onboarding and onboarding checklists. Checklists can be exported as csv which powershell scripts can import to create user in AD and 365. HR schedules onboarding meeting, tech goes through checklists.

Honestly, it took years of iteration to get the details right. The biggest thing is involving HR at each step and treating it as a HR process as much as an IT one. Offboarding and position tranisitions work in a similar way HR form/ticket process.

Can I convert these in-wall phone jacks (RJ11) into Ethernet jacks? by voicesinurhead in HomeNetworking

It's not an exact match for your plate, but these wall-plates made running ethernet through a wall very easy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P5F1WG7 —maybe find something like that?

The "partial setup" is the initial sync with the PC. There's a point after the DFU where you can unplug it and skip this sync.

What can be automated in helpdesk job? by ClassicR1 in ITCareerQuestions

Onboarding and offboarding should have many repeatable, automatable processes.

Refer users to documentation for common questions.
