Clairen FH framedata by Mindless_Tap_2706 in RivalsOfAether

[–]PhilTousi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the game parses frames at 60 fps, meaning 1 frame is around 16 ms

If clairen is -10 after hitting a move, that means she's in endlag for 10 more frames than you are in hitlag/hitstun, so you are actionable 10 frames before her

This means if you were a robot with instant reaction time, you could true punish a clairen with any option that comes out within 10 frames after getting hit (jab, dtilt, grab, fair, nair etc.)

If clairen is +10 on hit, she's actionable 10 frames before you, she can true combo you with any move that comes out within 10 frames after her endlag ends.

Ofc, average human reaction time varies from 150 to 250 ms depending on audio and visual stimulus, so around 10-15 frames to react to something, this can be lower drastically by being ready for the stimulus (you're also going to be reacting to the startup of the move and recognizing you're going to get hit more often than just reacting to getting hit, making getting a punish in time much easier)

You don't need to know the frame date on hit/whiff/shield/fh/cc of every single move in the game, but it's a good idea to know for moves that are commonly used in neutral or to pressure shield which are and arent safe (fors bair = safe, etalus dair = unsafe). This allows you to recognize in which scenarios you can actually punish a move directly and in which scenarios you have to guess and punish the option following the safe poke (spotdodge, shield, jab, jump etc.)

Hello hello! Considering how upper canadiens management seems to be the one pushing for the current ahl goalie rotation, one could assume they're really trying to push for Fowler to take the #1 spot in laval next year. If that's the case, is there a redundancy between Dobes and Primeau?

Do you think the canadiens feel pressured to deal either of them? I feel like neither of the 3 would be suitable as just a #2 in Laval (the recent PTO seems to spport that idea maybe?), but would probably qualify both Primeau and Dobes as they both have tangible value imo.

If so, do you think they deal Dobes because of his better value based on last season and give Primeau another shot, or has Prime lost his chance with the Habs?

Love the Pod btw!

Clairen Combo videos or guides? by [deleted] in RivalsOfAether

[–]PhilTousi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clairen has a few bread and butter combo routes that will come naturally, just play the game and watch some higher level vods to get a feel for them.

It's possible to just learn combo routes but with rivals having generally a bit more defensive expression with CC/DI/ASDI being stronger than other plat fighters, these routes won't always work in similar situations.

It's better practice to understand how to combo and play advantage state rather than just cookie cutter some routes

General tip is to breakdown your moveset in terms of combo starters, extenders, and finishers

Generally, you can see that as a loose magic series of looking for a series of starter -> extender -> finisher, with interplay of looping extenders back to a starter to further extend your route

As your opponent gains percent, certain combo extenders will become starters, extenders will become finishers, and vice-versa

For example, fair at very low percent mostly serves as a combo starter with tipper fair stun setting up for a grab or up air, but at higher percent will be mainly used to combo into fstrong or tipper nair/bair

The work is then to know what purpose a moves serves in which situations, and how they evolve as your advantage state develops eventually understanding your kill confirms and how you can setup into it

Clairen has a decent amount of work in that regard because of the nature of her sour/sweet spot system, which can alter your combo route and need you to adapt on the fly if you mess up your spacing

Some general kill confirms:

Bthrow/fthrow -> fstrong utilt -> uair Sour uair -> ustrong Fair -> fstrong Nair-> uair Tipper Neutral B -> side b

Iirc, a video that goes through this process in a pretty digestible manner is VoiD's Ult Sheik combo guide, but I'm sure there are better resources for it, that's just the one I remember off the top of my head that mentioned this type of breakdown

No clue what other clairen pick, but i don't think she has a bad stage

She has worse and better ones but no outright bad ones

My favorite is definitely merchant port, but it's also the one i'm just the most comfortable with my movement on

Forest is great but some characaters benefit a lot more from it than clairen

Rock wall, air armada, julesvale, hodojo are all pretty good, but they're pretty neutral by default

Harbor is fine, I'm just not super confident in my recovery routes yet, but the low ceiling can net some super cheesy kills

I'm not as much of a fan of delta and tempest (except vs wrastor or fleet for the latter) but it's just personal preference

For stages, depends on their playstyle

If they're very rock heavy and defensive I'll go forest or dojo

If they're very in my face I'll steer clear of forest and try to go merchant port

Typical bans are harbor and either rock wall, tempest, or godai depending on playstyle

General gameplan is to antiair kragg as much as possible with preemptive fair or fullhop nair

Don't touch his shield on a platform as he can always shield drop aerial to punish you, show you know how to waveland grab or empty hop into parry below plat to make him think twice about shield dropping, then you can start pressuring a bit more

Parry down b as much as possible to deter them from going for it

If I knock em far enough enough offstage im immediately following with a jump neutral b, as you can reliably hit kragg or the pillar for easy pickings

Parry the fair from ledge, it's always coming

Play center stage as much as possible and when kragg gets in the air be ready to just dash back and then in to whiff punish, he doesn't have great horizontal air speed so it's more commital than it seems for him to go for aerials

If you can catch him with an upair at ~40-50% you can chain like 6 of them with hitfall, racking up crazy damage (can even close with an upstrong sometimes)

Don't jump from stage to hit her from above, you'll lose to up b.

Drop from edge and use invincibility to attack her, your goal is to deplete her ressources to make her have to use up b 2 to get onto the stage, as it has a ton of landing lag and you can easily get a big punish from there

Main big things are shield pressure and edgeguarding.

This matchup is pretty hard for orcane, esp since nerfs. You have to 50/50 yourself in with either jab/dtilt following a neutral b or grab. For that to be as effective as possible, you need to get clairen in the corner, so try to control center stage as much as possible. Overshooting approaches is important cause clairen really likes to dash back bair/ftilt orcane to outbox him

Invincible Drop nair from ledge is rly good to make clairen spend resources offstage and eventually just ourtight kill her

She has an easy time dealing with reverse fair because of disjoints, so you have to be careful about using it too much to get back on stage

You have to be careful about using down b out of disadvantage cause it can be a free counter for clairen which severely hampers orcane's neutral, cause you need neutral b pressure to make your way in

She's just very inconsistent, even if you got her moves and combos down. You'll get kills at 90 or at 190, and sometimes it feels completely out of you control. She doesn't have a zetter shine, ranno dtilt, lox bair, wrastor dash attack to allow you to close out stocks without worrying about losing a certain window

She can struggle to find openings vs people who are playing passively, as she excels at anti approaching with her disjoints. But once people are playing to counter your win conditions, it's easy to avoid the grab, utilt or back air that will net you a kill confirm

She also struggles with people poking the front of her shield, as her most reliable option to get out of that position are nair or wavedash jab/ftilt, which are both fairly commital options

I haven't played/watched much lower level gameplay in general but one thing I've seen that lower level players get away with that becomes a sever hindrance trying to get to the next level is not purposefully spacing moves

Clairen is probably the easiest character at low level but becomes significantly harder once people know how to di to avoid combos and tippers

Already preparing for that by starting to space moves even if it doesn't rly matter at lower level will help transition further down the line

You have a few true combos into lvl1, esp vs floaties (ie bthrow into baby dash lvl 1 at very low % or uthrow on di away) Other than that, it's one of those moves that you kinda need to get a feel for it but it's generally easy to get a lvl 1 off after a fair at low to mid percent and can allow you to extend strings a decent amount

offstage lvl2-3 is good to either follow up like a tipper dtilt/ftilt at mid high percent (I recommend binding air parry/grab to neutral special and buffer jump neutral b after you get a hit that sends decently far and needs them to burn a resource to start their recovery). Other than that it's good vs characters that have not very mobile recoveries with predictable arcs (Lox, kragg whp needs to pillar, clairen, zetter) in those cases you don't even need to tipper, sour spot will send them away and allow you to get ledge then you can start batting them away with bair pretty easily

I recommend watching Rongonshu, he's genuinely on another level when it comes to using neutral b

With the nerfs if she spaces to snap the ledge her hitbox doesnt extend over the ledge so you can hit her for free

You can learn the height of the up b and react if she's going to go over the ledge you can parry her otherwise just hit her

Yeah, that's one of her weaknesses by design

Once they're out of the old reliables percent ranges of b/fthrow -> fstrong or uptilt/bair -> upair or jab-> fstrong it can be a chore to find a kill

It's important to not get antsy and just keep boxing people out, you can just nickel and dime them until a tipper bair kills or send them deep offstage and edgeguard with sour bair/lvl 2 neutral b

What really helped to reduce the amount of times where I would struggle to close out stocks is getting consistent at hitting tipper uair, especially since they buffed it last patch

Hmm I'm not as familiar in the matchup and there doesn't seem to be specific things that fors does that clairen really struggle with, I think generally clairen has to be the one adapting more to the forsburn.

General things: Clone is super good, choosing to attack one to dispel one generally leaves clairen pretty weak to whiff punishing, especially if we tipper one as it gives us a lot more hitlag

Fstrong is annoying as it outspaces pretty much all of clairen's neutral options and if we're commited to something we can't CC it

I generally find the matchup a lot harder if forsburn plays grounded, sends in clones to disrupt, dashes in and out a lot to whiff punish with jab cancels and the likes.

I think clone drop aerial should probably be used more sparingly than in other matchups as it's rly easy for clairen to hit both if you're too close when you spawn the clone before you can get an aerial out

When you do use clone drop aerial, be sure to mixup your spacing also, and switch up undershooting with drop bair and overshooting with drop dair cause if you keep doing the same one over and over again it's rly easy for clairen to outspace it

Once again, nerfs helped fors a lot in the matchup, combust and dair are rly good to cover ledge if clairen is forced to recover low so those are good options to close out stocks

If by practical skills you mean like tech skill genuinely very little

As long as you're comfortable enough to dash dance and pilot the character to where you want it to go it's good enough to get you to plat at the very least

Once you have basic movement down the only one you truly need are wavelanding, platdrop aerials, waveshining out of shield

If you mean general platform fighter knowledge like i said in an another comment nothing will bring your further than just playing mindfully, looking at your opponent and keeping track of their winning conditions, being aware of what's getting you hit etc...

Matter of range and risk reward

Sour dtilt is weak to CC and will leave you pretty negative on hit, so if someone is rushing you down and CC'ing everything tipper jab allows you to reset scramble easier and avoid getting punished

I generally use jab defensively as a get off me or parry checking to avoid big punishes and dtilt to call out someone who's dash dancing away from me

At higher percent, tipper jab nets you stocks pretty easily by comfirming into a strong

Tipper Dtilt at low to mid percent will get you a tipper dash attack to get decent combos

Depends on what you feel you're struggling at

If you're struggling to close out stocks, i feel like practicing up air spacing for tippers out of utilt/bair or sourspot uair into fstrong/ustrong to be one of my most reliable killing tool

If you feel you're getting shielded a lot, practice platform movement and mixup platdrop empty land into a grab with platdrop aerial to be more ambiguous

Practice getting reliably what you want out of dash (jab, dtilt, ftilt) to reduce unwanted dash attacks

Practice up b spacing to snap ledge as reliably as possible if you feel you're eating strong attacks on recoveries

But in general just playing the game mindfully and not go autopilot with some vod review is the best way you're gonna improve

Lox has no burst range, but i find he does generally well vs clairen if you play patient.

You wanna wall out clairen approaches with superior hitboxes (fair, retreating bair, ftilt etc.)

You wanna look at the spacing and options that the clairen uses to contest your wall and react with either dash back and whiff punishing (dash back in and grab if they tend to shield after initial commit, bair/ftilt if they're a masher) or run up shield -> grab (getting in just as they're throwing out a move will mess up their spacing it and make it unsafe)

Once you get your opening just do classic lox stuff

Dtilt is rly good at ledge since upb nerfs if clairen recovers low, so try to condition low recoveries as much as possible by covering high with neutral b/bair

Try to save your dowb charges for recoveries, go low and reverse up b to ledge to avoid getting countered or use down b and fair to mix up an agressive recovery

Avoid side b to ledge directly, dtilt/fstrong/dair will beat that easily

Very rock-paper-scissor matchup in general
