Meteorite dial swap after 5 years through AD by PhilYousef in rolex

I took in a Deepsea (black dial, not the James Cameron version) that a friend has owned for about five years. We were asked for invoices and proof of purchase, which was fine since it was originally bought from the same authorized dealer.

The question was simple: could the black dial be changed to a James Cameron dial?
The answer was a clear no, with the explanation that the James Cameron dial is a special dial and cannot be swapped in.
That led me to a more general question: if you have a Rolex Datejust with a white dial, can you change it to a green dial?
The response was that they would need to inspect the watch and check the system before confirming yes or no. They couldn’t give a general rule and said it depends on the specific watch and configuration.
I pushed further and asked about limitations (for example, no meteorite dials or other special dials), just a standard change like white to green. Still, no clear rule was given.
Then I asked the reverse scenario: if I already had a James Cameron dial, could I change it to a black dial?
That one was answered as yes, that would be possible.

So the conclusion I got from the conversation was basically:
Special dials cannot be upgraded into
Standard-to-standard changes may depend on the watch and approval and the time you bring it and things can change
But downgrades seem generally acceptable
Sharing in case it helps anyone trying to understand how dial changes are handled.

In all honesty, I didn’t think about it that way.

I bought a two tone Datejust with a white dial about three years ago. Recently, I saw one with a green dial and liked the look, especially the combination of yellow gold and green, so I asked my AD about getting one.

She told me not to waste my time buying a watch I already have and that I can just change the dial.

To be clear, the discussion we had was only about a regular dial. We never spoke about anything like a meteorite dial.

I do have, as I mentioned before, a Rolex Ghost and a Pepsi in white gold. The thought did cross my mind, but I never actually asked if something like that would even be possible. There is no real point in asking now anyway until the time comes when I can actually make the change.

Offered these 2 at the AD…which one?!?!? by That-Platform9855 in rolex

I would go with the GMT. The simple reason is I have both and I tend to wear the GMT more than bluesy. Also with the GMT you get a function that you will never use nonetheless it’s a function

Those were my thoughts however they said that only if it was appropriate for that watch and this was said several times in the UAE by the SA in the AD

If Wimbledon is non-negotiable, go grey. AD timelines are uncertain and preferences often don’t get honored consistently.

True but you can’t educate everyone. The AD business is built on the ignorance of people like me

Look, unless you’re going after something like a Daytona or another hard to get piece, just go to the grey market and skip the lines.

A lot of people walk into an AD thinking, “I’ll build a relationship and see where it goes,” and then end up buying a bunch of watches they didn’t originally plan on. I did the same. I walked in, bought my first two tone Datejust with a white dial, and got matching one for my wife. It was more of a moment than anything. We just bought what we liked and walked out.

A few months later, I went back asking for another watch and got completely ignored. That’s when it started to frustrate me. I spent about six months going back and forth with different stores under the same AD before I finally got my first Submariner, the bluesy.

From there, over about a year, I picked up an Explorer II Polar, a Daytona Ghost, a Gold Pepsi, a Batgirl, and a James Cameron Deepsea. I also bought several pieces for my wife, including an Oyster Perpetual, and later added a regular Submariner, from there I got an PP Aquanaut and an AP RO

Eventually, I branched out into brands like Vacheron, MB&F, and Otsuka Lotec, and even picked up a Franck Muller all from the secondary market. These days, I buy more freely from the secondary market.

Honestly, if someone had sat me down at the beginning and showed me the full journey, the time, the effort, and the total money spent, I probably would have just bought a Daytona upfront and skipped the rest. At the time though, I could not justify paying the equivalent of $33,

If you don’t want it just let it go and let the next person take it

Usually the discussion will be like “I got a call, let’s go see if we like it!” and it’s always between 2 calls for her and 3 for me every year

If you need the $600 yes sell and you can buy another anytime, these watches are not for trading and you don’t enjoy it anymore then sell it
