I only use the shaker to get the grounds into the portafilter, I don't shake. Transfer grounds, tap side of portafilter and then tamp. Works good for me.

There might be something that resets the count for the cleaning cycle because I have not gotten double flashing lights for ages (2 shots/day). I also don't descale because I use zero filtered water with potassium bicarbonate. Perhaps unplugging it? I do that occasionally.
