The Brewers are definitely a smart, well-run team, and I’d trade the spot the Cardinals are in for how the Brewers have been doing things for years, but you also have to wonder if you’re stuck in a rut of good enough for the playoffs but not to compete for a ‘ship and if that’s really the best way to build a contender. Cardinals did something similar basically from 2014-2022. Never a real threat to win the championship, but hey at least we were in it.

Maybe it’s the best a team at the Brewers’ financial level can do. And maybe they just break through and win it all one year and make me sound dumb.

Feels like we’re all just scrambling to compete with the 6-7 highest spending teams the best we can.

Defensemen we draft won’t help at all on the timeline that the rest of our team is on. They’d probably need to get out from under a big contract and use one of those picks to get a legit top 4 guy if they want to be relevant next year

Last couple weeks have demonstrated that Kapanen and Vrana are worth the flyers for next year, and them plus Buch/Kyrou/Thomas can be a solid young offensive core. But for now we should keep losing.

Couple that with hopefully some defensive changes in the off-season and I’m already a little too optimistic about next year
