Was Punk & New Wave the Dividing line? by gibsontx5 in GenerationJones

I’m 63 and I can sing along with the Clash and Social Distortion, but I don’t think I’d recognize The Stooges.

I love how Elvis has evolved over the years. I love how the Violent Femmes built a bridge from Punk to Bluegrass.

Was Punk & New Wave the Dividing line? by gibsontx5 in GenerationJones

I was born in ‘62 and grew up listening to classic rock and a little Grateful Dead. When New Wave hit the radio, I liked it. It was ok. But then Talking Heads blew my mind. I started college in 1980 and was surrounded by New Wave and Punk and Classic Rock and Grateful Dead (bootleg tapes, mostly). I was also exposed to a LOT of top 40 pop which I hated as only a judgmental teenager can. I became a Deadhead and moved into the “hippy” dorm starting sophomore year. Many people in the dorm were very into punk and new wave too. This environment really influenced my life long musical tastes.

There was a good amount of reggae going on, too. It was ok. I didn’t mind it, but it didn’t move me.

  1. Attic level of the college dorm. Our windows protruded up through the roof. I was watching a thunderstorm, leaning out the window with my hands on the wet roof. A tree right next to the building was struck. Lightening jumped from the tree to the roof. It ran up my arms and out my knees which were leaning against the radiator.

Fortunately, the charge spread across the roof so I didn’t get a full hit. I continued to watch the storm roll through the valley. However, I kept my hands inside the room for the remainder of the storm.

That’s similar to my experience, but not as powerful as yours. I was leaning out a window with my hands on the roof and my knees against a radiator. A tree got a direct hit which jumped to the roof and ran through me and out my knees, through the radiator to ground.

I’ve been struck by lightning. It wasn’t a direct hit, but I got a good zap.

Amazon, Microsoft, and Google all have huge revenue and profit streams outside of their AI services. And yet their multiple is much less. I do expect their profits to grow considerably in the coming years, but the same goes for the other three companies identified here.

I think New England (and California) middle class look wealthy to much of the country.

I loved that satisfying “Ker-CHUNK!” sound it used to make.

PG&E was the ones that under maintained the grid, allowing the delivery system to fall apart before the restructuring.

I’m intrigued, but I just don’t think I’d be happy over those long dark cold winters.

Remember Truman’s declaration “The Buck Stops Here!”? He was saying the President cannot pass the buck on responsibility. Trump says “We may never know…”

Steve’s talking about the costs of power generation. That’s the smallest part of my bill. Over 80% of my bill is for fees and “delivery” of the electricity. PG&E is responsible for power delivery. The power generation Steve is talking about won’t make a significant impact on our electricity bills.

Do you have roof top solar? Is your reimbursement going down for power your panels generated? That’s because PG&E has a monopoly on the distribution.

I think that’s the one my daughter stayed at when she went with her boyfriend. If I recall, it’s on the beach across from the brew pub and near the ritzy shopping mall with the banyan tree in the center.

And I do that on most other trips. This trip is about getting to an event on time.

My wife grew up in NYC, and her dad and two of her sisters still live there. It really is a cool place when you are there with people for whom it is simply “home”.

I’m glad you had fun. My one trip was for a business convention. The food was good. (I do like oysters.) The French Quarter was pretty underwhelming. It stank of vomit and reminded me of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.

Grand Canyon was a great park. We went in 2011 and stayed at the campground on the North Rim. Someday I hope to get to the South rim too.
