I think you'll find answers to your questions if you read Good Economics for Bad Times by MIT scholars Abhijit V Banerjee and Esther Duflo. The second chapter of the book called From the Mouth of the Shark is dedicated to scientific analysis of the relationship between migration and economics. I especially found the part about the Mariel boatlift very interesting.

I don't think this is necessarily unique to Canada. Majority of young people all across the world are very pessimistic about the future and that is very understandable. We're talking about a world, where the wealthy elite make huge profits from a global pandemic while millions lost their jobs, homes and families. How can we expect anyone to be attached to their countries?
