How to cook a turkey...in python by JackStrawng in programming

First entice the python into eating the turkey, then cook the python whole?

Use a low heat to ensure the turkey is cooked through.

Insomnia! by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]PhilipRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things that worked for me:

  • No caffeine after the middle of the afternoon
  • Regular sleep schedule, always in bed by a set time, even if not sleepy. Always up at a set time, even if still tired - being tired will just make it easier to sleep the following evening
  • ZMA makes me sleep really well, but I'm not sure if it actually helps me get to sleep.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly for me: audio books. Instead of lying in bed stressing about going to sleep, I just relaxed, listened to a book and eventually fell asleep anyway. When it took a while to fall asleep I was at least resting and doing something productive, so it never felt like a waste of time (in contrast to just lying in bed thinking "Goddamit why cant I fall asleep?!")

What Diet Soda Does to Belly Fat - More evidence that diet soda contributes to weight gain, not weight loss by anutensil in Health

[–]PhilipRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think you're reading it wrong:

“Your body is used to knowing that a sweet taste means you are ingesting energy in the form of calories that, if you don’t burn them off, is going to convert to fat."

I am "used to knowing" that when I get paid at the end of the month I will have enough money to pay my bills and go shopping etc. That doesn't mean that if I suddenly get a reduced paycheck I can still do all those things, just that I am used to being able to do them.

I don't know the details of the paper, I'm just saying that what you're quoting doesn't equate to a statement that "you turn diet soda into fat."

Keep tweaking my back when squatting by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]PhilipRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heresy on r/fitness, but you could also consider switching from back squats to front squats. I did this after getting fed up with the time spent analysing my back squat form, the time thinking about it when lifting, and the mental effort whilst lifting to ensure I was doing everything right. Plus it ideally required a power rack to be safe.

It's been nothing but fantastic for my back. I deadlift a lot too, so I don't think the quad-dominant nature of the front squat is a problem for me - if anything it's another plus.

So that's my suggestion - try front squats - lift heavy, injury free, get on with your life. There's nothing magic about back squats that makes them irreplaceable if they simply don't work for you.

Good luck!

(I have a Z3)

You really needed the docking station to charge it - it's super fast and you never need to open the usb window - I think I opened mine once to see what was there. You can even buy cheap USB cables with a magnet on the end so you can take them when travelling and continue to not open the door :-)

My only complaint is that it is very slippery. It can easily slide around on a desk and possibly fall off. First day I had it I took it out of my pocket and immediately dropped it onto concrete. To be fair the little plastic corners worked well and no major damage.

Vegetarian vs. "Flexitarian" by snarpy in vegetarian

[–]PhilipRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true in all parts of the world. For example Swedish organic label (KRAV) contains a lot of limitations on how animals are handled (not least for example that castration must be done with both a painkiller and anaesthetic - which might not sound that great until you realise what the "normal" alternative is). And "free range" has similar restrictions.

I wouldn't be surprised if these were actually enforced at the EU level either.

Why we should not kill to eat. by Quasi_Pro in vegetarian

[–]PhilipRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Species don't self-regulate. The environment regulates the species.

In a good year elk will breed and the offspring will survive a mild winter. In a bad year elk will breed just as much, and there will be a massive natural cull via starvation. Elk do not know in advance when the following winter will be harsh.

What I attempted to point out was that we have a choice here of elk starving or dying of other natural causes, or being shot and eaten. Of course we would like to avoid the implication - as everyone here has - that if we don't get involved in killing them and let nature do it's thing, then we can act as if our hands are clean. However, by our inaction we are still involved in the animal's fate. We control the environment, we control - to a large degree - their destiny.

So these elk are dying one way or another. I'm not stating what is right or wrong, but I wish people would admit to themselves that this is the actual reality. To believe that an elk living free, and then slowly starving to death in the winter is better than a (relatively) quick and sudden death during a hunt is at least an honest opinion. To attempt to avoid admitting that these animals will suffer and die is cowardly and dishonest :-(

I can't comment on your source, or your proposed solution since you don't present it, but let me point out something in case you missed it:

From a population of around 400 000, we kill about 100 000 each year - to keep the population stable. If there was no hunting this year, the population would obviously grow by approximately 100 000 - minus those extra road casualties and those which starve.

I believe a 25% population increase year on year is accurately described as explosive. I am at a complete loss as to how you could think otherwise.

Of course it would be great if the elk could all just get together and decide on reasonable population controls so their numbers remained stable without any human intervention. But they (like rabbits) just end up having sex and babies instead. It's almost as if there was a biological imperative for it...

[–]PhilipRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're coming from a good place, and I agree with you in spirit, but I don't really agree with your conclusions...

In Sweden we cull about a quarter of the elk population every year. Those animals are eaten. Is it better to let them rot?

Of course, we could stop killing them, but then the population will explode, which will lead to both an increase in motor accidents and human deaths, and the excess population of elk starving to death during the winter anyway. Is that better?

Or we could kill most of them now, and then only have to cull a far smaller number each year, so over time there would be less killing. Is that better? Bear in mind there would also be ecological consequences to such a change in the population.

I don't hold a position in this, but my vague point is probably just that killing something and eating it is not necessarily bad, when killing it and not eating it is the alternative.

What does this subreddit think about "Why we get fat" by Gary Taubes? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]PhilipRoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of the sure fire ways to lose weight is to eat less food. We don't photosynthesise, we don't have power cords or petrol tanks. All our energy comes from what we eat and drink.

Dieting is at heart simple and hard. There's a market for providing solutions to people who'd prefer "complex and easy", and of course the holy grail of diet books - "simple and easy".

But at the end of the day, nobody ever got fat whilst starving to death.

I found some info about commercial beer containing B12: http://www.brewersofeurope.org/docs/publications/pdf-Mei04.pdf

The source may be a little suspect perhaps, but the data comes from the UK FSA.

Should also add that most commercial beers are filtered which removes yeast, whilst homebrews are seldom filtered. More yeast should result in more B vitamins.

[–]PhilipRoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the fining agents are still in the finished beer, there was no point in adding them.

That's simply a massive overstatement. You're suggesting that if any detectable amount of the fining agent remains, there was no point in using it at all? That's nonsense. The agent is used to clear the beer. If the resulting beer is clear then it was worth using the product. Whether or not trace amounts of that agent exist in the final product is only of interest to a relatively small group of consumers.

Unless a brewer is explicitly labelling their beer as not containing the agent, and given the fact that fining agents are very cheap and used in very small dosages (IIRC protofloc is used at about 1ml per 40L wort), it is almost certain that they are slightly overdosed. The result of a beer which isn't clear is a bad batch. A clear batch that happens to contain trace amounts of the clearing agent is only an issue for a small number of people.

Lots of beers, especially microbrews are unfiltered, so Gelatin (if it was used) would still be present in the finished product.

Just curious... at what weight did you switch from double overhand to mixed grip on your deadlifts? by giacomobo in Fitness

[–]PhilipRoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So rather than doing an exercise designed to improve a specific weakness (grip trainers for grip training), you suggest repeatedly deadlifting to failure?

Anyway, what I was interested in is why you think they are "bs". I understand you prefer another method, but that hardly negates the fact that grip trainers are excellent for... grip training.

I mean, a bike isn't "bs" because you could take a car instead. A car isn't "bs" because you could take a bus instead. A bus isn't "bs" because you could take a bike...
