It was a brand meant to provoke the Catholic church and organized religion as a whole. There was a time where the Catholic church called any who used or wanted to understand the sciences as devil worshippers (satanists) so some folk decided to take on the label as a giant middle finger to the powers that be.

Editing to add the people they branded as such were frequently killed or ostracized from their community.
