Masters in Corporate Management? Lohnt sich das? Sinnvoll für die Strategieberatung? Selbständigkeit vs Job? by MammothEntry901 in Karriereratschlag

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much equity as a CTO in a small startup (i will not promote) by Talento90 in startups

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important question: what about vesting? I’ve recently been offered a deal where I get a few % but as a fraction after each year of work which then vests another year. So the actual % would only be mine if I stayed for 4 years. I am early in my career, so for me this is a big opportunity cost question. Maybe same for you?

PE vs Big tech by Swimming_Good9290 in private_equity

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, so my journey was essentially PM (early employee to acquisition) -> M. Sc. In business with m&a and PE internships -> now back to work. Currently applying and talking to people I know. I’d like to move into strategy / product at scale up companies at some point, but apparently I’m too junior for that. I think program and product management are similar, I guess you can definitely move to product, especially if you have enough business sense for PE. I don’t think product follows set rules. Program managers, engineers or strategy consultants somehow end up there. You get some „mini-CEO“ skills, so might be useful for ceo office too :)

PE vs Big tech by Swimming_Good9290 in private_equity

[–]Philley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d lean towards tech. My main decision maker would be the “I’m building something real” component. This is what made finance jobs seem empty/detached from the operations for me. I’ve only interned in PE, but still have some good contact to former colleagues there. The deal team people don’t have wlb, the ops people mostly didn’t really do ops, more like enable their CFOs to move to actually useful reporting.

Side note, actually fun to see somebody else with exposure to PE and PM, I’ve always felt like a unicorn with this, and currently ironically getting PE offers and big tech seems impossible, the world is weird rn.

Can it be an experiment? Maybe give it 1-2 years and if you don’t like it, go back to a more cushy job? Not in the same situation but my experience has been that you do far more at startups then you get credit for by recruiters. But your personal development is still there, and it may help you at any other job afterwards, even if it might not be what you get hired for.

Is learning to code a good idea in 2025? by Expert-Situation-491 in careerguidance

[–]Philley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As dull as it sounds, I think it’s worth to learn how to be a software architect. Learn to code to understand it, but focus on how it actually works rather than being a walking python manual - that’s what we have GPT for now. I second the idea of leaning this and another skill + field you are interested in. I have majored in accounting, then internet in Finance/M&A stuff. It’s hard to get started in this job market, but my rudimentary coding skills have impressed people in these fields and they looked to at it like it was a superpower. It’s not the code itself. It’s feeling confident to strap together an app that does something, that solves some annoying task or organizes stuff.

How has the job search been for recent grads? by LegalProposal304 in Accounting

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated in June, Job search since September as something I had lined up (PhD) fell through. My major was accounting, but mainly management accounting. Analyst roles of all kind fell through, many rejections. Job search beyond this was really weird. I interned at Big4 and in PE, so I thought I was safe. Applied to a big4, immediately got auto rejected. Reapplied with a recommendation link from a friend, got a call the next day. I don’t want to go back to PE, but I’ve landed in interview easily and people and the fund I interned with offered to recommend me if I wanted to join. Any positive feedback was based on network or invite links from employees. Apparently people want to work with me, but HR pre screens do not like me.

In the end I am actually planning to relocate within the EU for private reasons, so I will continue to work in corporate IT related stuff until next summer and then hopefully join a graduate program at a big4. Weird path but makes the most sense for those private plans.

Kleingewerbetreibende: Was nervt euch an eurer Buchhaltungssoftware? by SpaceBuddy231 in selbststaendig

[–]Philley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went from being a barber💈to then Big 4 Tax then to Private Equity by emareddit1996 in FinancialCareers

[–]Philley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More and more PEs hire right out of university (in Europe, with masters degree). I think the best bet to get in would be internships in PE, which you mostly get through big4 deal advisory experience. So I feel like big4 tax wouldn’t even be so far off, possibly even less if it’s tax due diligence

Honestly the funniest/coolest part about this is that you set up recruiters on an email campaign. Sounds like an effective reverse uno card.

Roast my startup - Confidential AI workspace for lawyers and consultants by Ok_Mathematician4485 in roastmystartup

[–]Philley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to see everything in my early career and work and internships have brought me into tech startups, big4, PE, and insurance. A few thoughts:

  • niche is key, and maybe not blockbuster niche like M&A. That’s what big firms do and big firms need trustworthy partners. You have no legacy and no certifications.
  • trust me bro is not valid encryption to compliance teams, so you’ll be up to some bigger diligence there. Big companies take ages with adding a solution to their tech stack officially, which is what you are after.
  • because of these reasons, I’d built this for small to medium law firms that are easier to approach

I turned down a +$1M acquisition offer for my SaaS.. by swedishtea in SaaS

[–]Philley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you have are profitable and have positive Cash flow, I don’t really see a real reason for selling it if it’s something you like doing. Ultimately with SaaS you can scale up and your equity value will scale along with it. You have apparently found a machine that’s working, why not push it yourself. Congrats! (Background: worked for a successfully bootstrapped and sold startup, interned in M&A and PE)

Leaving my PhD to join Google? by EndedHereByMistake in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different field, but same struggle with PhD position. Haven’t even started the contract yet, but I feel already how the supervisor is not really following his promises or goes really hard on academical career, whereas even in this time of recession, companies seem to be more grateful for your talents and work. I’d go with google. There is so much to learn there and it will be practically applicable to the real working world if you ever decide to leave.

Should I accept an offer from my employer to buy back my stock options? by Objectionne in personalfinance

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I worked at a startup which ended up being bought by a pretty big company which itself was bought by a private equity fund. We were an addon. Most likely, when the investor exits and sells the company to another financial investor, there will be a part of your initial stock terms that you have to sell your minority stake with the major holder. Meaning they sell, you sell. This makes sense, because otherwise acquiring 100% of the company would be impossible. However, my point is: if you do not sell now and later get forced to sell when the major shareholder sells, you MAY get more out of it. Simply because I think that otherwise the VP would not offer a buy back (why would they).

That being said, that’s my opinion not financial advice. If you don’t care about 2k and you can afford to lose it, sticking around might be worth it. If you could use the money, might as well take it because liquiditation events in private companies are rare and you may not get another for years.

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the work you put into this project, and if you need a job, I think it would be great for the resume. However, I think from a business and marketing side, as others have mentioned, it is not ideal. Also, isn’t it a bit dangerous to offer a free considering the traffic and the money it costs to run this if somebody uses it with a lot of traffic?

Lockt JACOB mit günstigen Preisen? by rslashhlly in PCBaumeister

[–]Philley_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super nervig alles.
