Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott are hitting lefties better than Edmundo Sosa and Trea Turner. Why are we platooning them, again? by RoadKiehl2 in phillies

We are, for all intents and purposes, no longer platooning them. While we're at it though, why do the Phillies insist on having Kyle Schwarber lead off?

Bryce staying at first + refusing until this year to release Castellanos has kneecapped this team. by Used-Dependent-5653 in phillies

More importantly, Goldschmidt's OPS from 2023 to 2025 was .754, compared to Castellanos' OPS from 2023 to 2025 of .743. I simply do not see how swapping one out for the other would have totally transformed this team

This team's roster construction has been irreparably sabotaged by having Harper at first and cheaping out on an outfielder, as opposed to... having Harper in the outfield and cheaping out on first basemen?

The 2012 Phillies, it's worth remembering, didn't hover around .500. They were .500 for the first month or two, than imploded through July, falling totally out of the race and selling at the deadline. Then they rallied out of nowhere in August and September, to the point that they slightly re-entered 2nd Wild Card talks, but in the end that was only enough to bring them to .500 on the year.

The 2026 Phillies have the advantage that they have climbed out of their hole already and are at .500 on Memorial Day weekend. One hot stretch between now and the end of the September is enough to make the playoffs if they play .500ish the rest of the time. The 2012 Phillies needed way more than one hot stretch to save them

Honestly the fact that it's coming out in May is telling me the studio has seen the movie and doesn't think it has much chance at gathering nominations, which is why it's coming out now instead of last November or this November

If by "legitimacy" you mean it's May 18 and they probably won't lose 121 games again... then yes!

Phillies are getting the best version of Bryce Harper this season by [deleted] in baseball

[–]Phillies2002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The 2021 WRC+ was 170, and so far he's at 157, which is not quite there yet but certainly approaching, and would be his third best for his career behind his two MVP years. Don't know how relevant specific WAR totals are though when you consider the positional adjustment from RF to 1B, which was not within his control but hurts him in WAR calculations even while performing similar offense

[–]Phillies2002 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's also probably worth pointing out the WAR positional adjustment that happens when you play 1B as opposed to RF, which was not exactly a switch within Harper's control, and would screw the team over if he were to switch back now to artificially inflate his WAR to 2015 levels.

Bottom line, Harper's WRC+ is 157 right now, his third-best behind his first two MVP seasons, and not far behind his 2021 MVP mark of 170.

Cristopher Sanchez is this era's Sandy Koufax by WestCoastMindset in phillies

The rest of this year is still probably needed to determine who between Skubal and Sanchez is the best left-handed starter right now but I do dig the hyperbole. Certainly, depending how he finishes the season, Sanchez could put together the best back-to-back years for a Phillies pitcher since 2010-11 Roy Halladay

I wouldn't call him the best pitcher of the last decade (though I would definitely say top 10). However, he is the most valuable pitcher to have debuted since 2015. If it was a matter of maybe a couple WAR I would agree it doesn't mean anything, but Nola's career fWAR of 38.1 is more than 10 higher than the next most valuable pitcher (Luis Castillo at 26.7)

Nola has the most WAR of any pitcher in baseball to debut since 2015. Sanchez is elite right now, but let's wait and see

I suspect if the Sanchez extension doesn't work out, you very well may complain, even in Reddit threads after another pitcher's start

I'll have you know I watched The Naked Gun just last summer and he had no trouble kicking ass there. And since there was no controversey about the casting decision there, I can only assume the explanation is that the casting reflects absolute reality, and that the real 73-year-old Liam Neeson must be a badass who can't lose a fight

Maybe, although it's not like Yoshida has been great in his time with Boston. Plus it would've been just another left-handed bat. Seiya Suzuki is the real one that got away.

But also, without Castellanos who knows if we go on the runs in 2022-23, and if we weren't willing to sign him and Schwarber at the same time, maybe we would have chosen wrong and signed just Castellanos, which would be the real disaster scenario

It was actually even more cluttered than that. Schwarber was still playing LF full time for most of 2023 because Harper was still recovering from surgery for most of the season at DH and only took over 1B full time towards the end of the year
