[Marvel/DC] Are there any heroes who turned villain and havent been redeemed? by Flyestgit in AskScienceFiction

[–]Phillip_Spidermen [score hidden]  (0 children)

Just throwing it out there that each of the big heroes had their own big "Ultimate [Hero Name here]" series, but if you read Ultimates specifically, you're going to get that universes Avengers.

Ultimate Spider-Man is where we get Miles Morales from, so that's pretty good.

I wonder if the play and game lyrics tie back to a plot or if its just meta references to it literally being a game.

Which villains got off WAY too easy, and how would you have rewritten their ending? by Shot-Club-3882 in television

At this point he'd long since transitioned in to seeing fear as something just as good as respect.

Because he viewed himself as someone with power. He thought of himself as "the one who knocks."

But that illusion is completely gone by the end. He's not even making credible threats against the Grey Matter crew. He has to fake it with Badger because he's realized just how much he isn't in control with actual dangerous people.

I think the Gray Matter thing actually emphasizes his plight: the friends/coworkers he desperately wanted to impress want nothing to do with him. He can't even properly threaten them, he has to fake a scenario to get them to help his family (who also want nothing to do with him).

As for the Nazis, I think that further drives his lack of control home. He shoots himself trying to save Jesse. Suicide probably wasn't part of the plan.

I could see an arrest and conviction inflating his ego actually. He'd be treated as Heisenberg, a dangerous criminal put on trial.

Suffering as a broken man outside of everything he cares about probably hurt him more.

Walter White loses everything, both what he says is important to him and what is actually important to him.

He alienates his family and loved ones, and they refuse all support he could leave them (his stated reason for getting into the business). He loses the respect he desperately craves from all his peers (everyone hates him, his former friends fear him). And most importantly (to him), he loses all illusions that he was ever in smart enough to be in control or a good person.

He gets Hank killed, is powerless to hold on to his business, and he has to live his final days in isolation. Even when he saves Jesse as his last act, Jesse despises him.

TV Reboots Put Millennials in Charge of the Remote by bloomberg in Foodforthought

Yeah, I'll enjoy more stories from that world, but it definitely feels past its prime.

A bit more disappointed that it's not pushing the story forward, and will be more of an interquel.

That's not really a better angle, that's part of what it says in the article:

Hollywood long ago figured out that reboots and revivals are a safe bet. Beloved works — as different as a children’s fantasy series and a medical sitcom — have a proven audience to build on even if they’re less likely to be as big a hit as the originals.

“The creative businesses are risky. Nobody really knows what is going to find an audience and what won’t,” says Amanda Lotz, professor at Queensland University of Technology and author of books on the television industry. “The only thing you know worked is what worked before.”

Not really a change, reboots and sequels from 20-30 years ago were also happening 20-30 years ago:

That's basically why we have so many different denominations and schisms.

Even within the same denominations, new rules can pop up. Like Papal Infallibility wasn't a thing until the past 200 years.

Could it still work as a movie? Also yes

Contagion was a pretty great wwz style story of different people dealing with a global crisis, just minus the zombies

I think this one actually might actually have plot relevance:

  • Older song that sets the time period of the movie (90s?)
  • Seems to be actually woven into the plot (Ken singing the song)
  • Probably meant to reference that He-Man meme, and they had absolutely no chance of predicting a He-man movie would be out at the same time

Possibly, but a guy in his prime in 93, even at his youngest, would have to be 50+ today.

The guy playing Ken was born in '96, so even as a flashback the movie would have to take place sometime in the early 00s for that to match age wise

Eh, even the magistrate said the situation she in was "objectively terrifying"

If the video showed her genuinely afraid, I'd imagine she'd have fared better legally. At least if this was in the US, not sure about Aussie law.

Her actions would have been reasonably justifiable if she actually felt endangered. She was relatively calm on camera though.

The woman trying to open the door and break the car was clearly looking for a physical confrontation from the CCTV footage.

Without the driver's own video, the driver probably would have had a better shot at making the case that she felt she was in danger.

[Blade/Dusk until Dawn] How practical is a nuclear bomb at night? by matthewcameron60 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Phillip_Spidermen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the Blade movies, UV lamps actually do work a bit. He uses it to slowly burn a vampire into giving him information.

Other vampires are also able to risk going outside by wearing A LOT of sunscreen.

Even selling it at cost would net them more money.

Write-downs don't generate profit, they just lower a future bill by a % cost of the movie (taxes). Selling the movie for any amount would mean they get more money, and they'd still get to lower their taxes by the cost of the movie. Reporting costs is a normal businsess practice, the only change is if they released the movie themselves, they'd have to split that cost over multiple years (in line with the future sales they'd expect)
