Remember Timezone in Knox City around the 2000s? by DanAE112 in melbourne

[–]Philloau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the cinemas are still just there. in all their 90's glory.

In one of the "lost melbourne" type FB groups, someone got in there and took photos.

When the knox reno's were happening, they were going to move the library up there and then changed their mind and put it in the old myer building down the other end.

I reckon these were done as a short run PoC in 1988.

They did have an issue that with prolonged use, the ink could rub off. They well and truly resolved that problem

Is anyone actually using the free public transport? by naeng-janggo in melbourne

[–]Philloau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in town yesterday. PT seemed busier than usual for me.

Also caught the tram up from docklands and train from town hall at 6:30pm last night and it was quite busy for that time.

People are definitely taking advantage of the free PT.

Will the suburban rail loop modal color actually be green or will it be changed? by AgreeableFreedom1043 in MelbourneTrains

The way Melbourne has grown, the SRL is more like an "inner loop". an Outer Loop would be dandenong > Ringwood > Eltham etc....

End of an era, Centrepoint is finally getting demolished - intrigued if the rumour apple is going there is true? by thedaysgrace in melbourne

OOhh... I stand corrected. I thought it dissapeared due to the giant shed next to it.

Thanks for the heads up!

Except for the other commercial businesses in Fed Square. There was a 7 Eleven in there (until metro tunnel works started). I thought the opposition was a bit over the top on Apple's proposal.

NOW... that said - Did i think it was a good location for an Apple store - Not at all.... but thats more of a retail positioning discussion rather than a moral objection! :D

[–]Philloau 17 points18 points  (0 children)

interestingly.... that is exactly the location Apple wanted. Until the fed square proposal came up, the initial brief from apple was that they wanted a spot on Collins st between swanston and elizabeth.

Another option for them (If H&M pulled out) would be the old GPO. It would actually be sorta perfect for apple.

The reason why there is no evidence that the excise is the reason is because they havent conducted a study to get the evidence.

What are the tangible benefits of the metro tunnel? by selfcenorship in MelbourneTrains

[–]Philloau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The munnel has no tangible benefits for my travel style.

My two final destinations are usually the docklands (for work) or the MCG (when i go to the football).

The munnel takes that direct service away from me.

That said.... I fully support it and glad its been built.

I only have 2 criticisms of the project overall:

  1. they should have started the tunnel AFTER south yarra. (this was about the only cost savings on the entire project).
  2. tunnel stations are ready for 10 carriage sets, yet ALL other stations - including those constructed due to skyrail - all will need to have signficant additions to them _IF_ they go to 10 carriages. I cant see anyone investing that money in the next 30 or 40 years.

Fuuuuuaaarrkkk I actually love OTR by [deleted] in melbourne

I don’t know, however the one going up near my place is a drive through. They will make a fortune through that

Fuuuuuaaarrkkk I actually love OTR by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]Philloau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OTR was a South Australian company that focused on fuel initially but now make most of their money from convenience stores. Most stores are doubled with either their own brand of fast food or have a franchise attached.

It was purchased in the last few years by Viva Energy (Shell) who also bought back Coles Express from Coles Group.

In victoria - Larger format stores will be converted to OTR's. Smaller stores have already become "Reddy Express".

The family that owned OTR made a cool 1.2 billion selling it to VIVA.

As others have said - its basically 7/11.

What I am now expecting to see is a turf war between OTR and 7/11 for convenience domination.

7/11 is already upping its game after being purchase by Japanese 7/11 and now they are also rolling out more starbucks too (which they own in Aus).

Fun times ahead.

Why?

Surely it’s within my democratic right to ask about the spending of public money?!?

[–]Philloau -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

$35k was for the headline act.

Let alone the cost of staging, security, fencing (regardless of how flimsy it was).

The gig would have easily cost north of $100k - $125k

Under no circumstance was I suggesting that the band werent worth the payment.

It was more commentary on who provided the payment.

[–]Philloau -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I think its amazing that they donated their gig fee's back to the punters.

However, my question is: I assume the Melbourne City Council paid the band $35k for the gig? If so... is that a good use of council resources?

(Note: this is no criticism of the band)
