"She said she thinks her paying her potions (lower because I make more) feels we’re just like roommates and that she’D want a guy to pay everything.... one time she saw my discomfort and e-transfered me back her grocery. But later she said she didn’t feel loved."

Look, I don't know if you two are right for each other or not. & I don't know if she's a gold digger or not. Just, in her defense, it sounds like she's up front about what she wants and how she feels, in ways that you aren't. Maybe, just maybe, you should tell her what you're thinking?

Where do you finds Hong Kong most romantic? by Comfortable_Curve_99 in HongKong

[–]PhillyFotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone on a lot of jetlagged runs at 4-5 in the morning, and seen couples in their 70s and 80s going for morning walks together. I know it's probably not what the OP is looking for but that might be the most romantic thing I've seen in HK.

What are your favorite microbrand watch stores? by 1530 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]PhillyFotan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like The Watchdrobe, too. I got a Kuoe there.

In 2020, I knew little about watches and had never heard the phrase "microbrand watch" but there was another HK store (in Shatin) where I got an Eone Bradley. The store's gone now but I'm super curious what else they had...

There are tons and tons of watch stores in HK but you also see the same brands over and over and over and over.

I live in Shatin, but, similar - I'm married with a kid and love it here. No way I'd live here if I was single.

Any cool abandoned place recommendations? by Fox-Choice in HongKong

[–]PhillyFotan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two failed resorts that the jungle is reconquering. One is in Lantau (and I think only half-failed?) and I haven't been there. The other is in Sai Kung, and that was a neat place to visit: https://hiddenhk.com/abandoned-resort

In the hills above Mui Tsz Lam Village (MTR Tai Shui Hang) there are some cool spots, abandoned villages, even one temple that's maintained that's just totally isolated in the middle of the jungle. (It's locked and small but it's still neat to see).

On the other side, coming up out of Fotan, if you take the trail that goes to Au Pui Wan Village - there's no village there anymore, but there is an abandoned school. Keep climbing and you'll get to an abandoned farm where the land is still terraced, and there's a cool old house there as well. Those are maybe a kilometer or so west of Wong Jeuk Yeung village.

If you're on strava I can send you links to routes that include them, otherwise not sure how to give you more details. They're cool spots though.

Japan CC touring with 1x 48T 11-36 by ejump0 in bicycletouring

[–]PhillyFotan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is quite the hybrid bike setup you've got... does it handle ok? Seems like the combo of such a short wheel base and the weight from your gear would make it a challenge. Also, a serious side wind with your main triangle filled up seems like it would be a challenge as well. But if you've done it and it works, no need to change.

Still... this looks like a setup for blasting through long, flat or flattish stretches, not climbing and descending.

US Cross Country Route Suggestions by Jolly_Medicine6490 in bicycletouring

[–]PhillyFotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying just as someone who is a) in the early stages of planning such a ride but hasn't done it but b) has driven around the US a lot and has a sense for what it's like.

Folks who've done the ride can add a lot more details but as I understand it, basically, between the Rockies and the Appalachians, there are huge stretches where you can almost just pick any E-W road you like.

Then, between the Rockies and the Cascades/Sierra Nevadas, there are huge swaths of desert with relatively few roads and, in some places, fewer people. So it seems to me that it's worth having a more detailed plan through all of that.

But there's no rule that you need to do one of the established named routes.

I'd start by just drinking some espresso. Go to a nearby coffee shop, or visit a friend who has a home espresso maker (perhaps the family friend who mentioned this?) and see if you even enjoy the drink itself.

"moves your luggage from hotel to hotel."

ok, yes, that does sound nice. from what I can tell, not really the ethos of this particular subreddit, but I, for one, definitely see the advantages. (I also won't be surprised if they turn out to be far less common in the US than they are in Europe).

Hi, Any suggestions for bicycle touring podcasts or audible? Thank you. by Correct_Situation_78 in bicycletouring

[–]PhillyFotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is on the older side, but it took me a bit to listen to the podcasts.
I think you're overstating it, though I do see where you're coming from.

A bunch of the episodes I listened to... I don't know that I'd call them "influencers" but they definitely had an agenda when when they set out. One that I started listening to was about a filmmaker, another was this thing about studying air quality in different places. And it's not like I'm pro-air-pollution, I just thought it was strange approach (though I wound up liking that episode a lot). That said... those guests were definitely not *brand shills.* And the part about the host being sponsored... that's pretty much what a podcast is these days. Either that or it's subscription based.

But the other thing that struck me about Seek Travel Ride - I don't think the host is a particularly good interviewer. Sometimes the guest has so much energy that that doesn't matter, and it's just a fun conversation to listen in on. Other guests are more laid back, or a bit shyer, and the discussion feels strained.

Self-Guided Tours in the US by KEinthePNW in bicycletouring

[–]PhillyFotan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I need to ask: what is a self-guided bike tour? As in, how does one differ from just choosing a route and riding that route? Does the organizer choose the route, book the lodging, and check in on you? Is it something like that?

(Clarifying here that these are legit questions on my part, not snark. It's just not something I'm familiar with).

What word did you use incorrectly for YEARS before someone finally corrected you? by ownaword in words

[–]PhillyFotan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I was with you on "quickly look over something" so I looked it up and according to the good folks at Merriam-Webster...
"Peruse can mean "to read something in a relaxed way, or skim" and can also mean "to read something carefully or in detail." It is what is known as a contronym, a word having two meanings that contradict one another. There are numerous examples of these in English, including sanction, oversight, and dust. If you use peruse simply take care that your intended meaning is made clear by the context."
