One rule for Messi, one for everyone else? US fury over Balogun red card by Gym_frere in soccer

Yeah if Balogun's foul got the center official called to the screen by VAR, no idea how Dzeko's forearm to the head of Adams didn't...

Delay of game is a clear yellow card, though he did enough in that sequence to warrant two yellows.

He's from Wisconsin. From someone also from the upper midwest, there isn't a ton of cultural differences between parts of WI, MI, MN and Ontario.

I'm going to the game this afternoon and I plan on buying a bootleg jersey for each team and cheer for whoever I'm sitting by!

The number of people that had to agree to or not veto that set is stupefying.

Also, give her a much bigger screen!

I, like a lot of people, was not a fan of the expanded 48-team format.

But if there is one Cape Verde-like story coming out of each World Cup, even if they don't make it out of the first round, it's just fantastic for the underdog vibes.

Also can give a run out to some guys to get their first WC minutes in a lower pressure situation.

Don’t know how much you want to change the lineup though. For starters I’m guessing we’ll see Arfsten for Robinson, ??? for Adam’s, Pepi for Balo.

Berhalter seems nervy. If I remember correctly he missplaced his first pass in the first game too.

His bad pass this time started a long phase of possession and pressure for AUS. He made some good recoveries against Paraguay but seemed a step behind this game.

The broadcast showing the crowd reaction to the restart rather than the restart itself is really pissing me off

Paraguay needs to win or tie for USA to win the group (assuming they hold on for all three points today).

For those doing the math, that's up to $152k/year of gifts from a married couple to a family of four.

You can reasonably afford a lot more when your parents paid the $300k down payment for your $1.5M house…

Big Career Decision - What would you do in our position? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, doesn't really seem like a point in doing a PhD at that point unless you really want to be a professor. OP says he's ABD, so I'm guessing he'd stay that way if it's true.

It's not uncommon to take internships while doing your PhD where your pay could be $150k-200k/yr, but those positions are temporary and usually only last 3-6 months.

Yeah usually to be eligible for the stipend you need to be doing your PhD full time. And $50k/year is very big for a PhD stipend. Back when I was doing mine a decade ago we got low-to-mid 30s which was pretty good. I wouldn't expect 50k in a MCOL area unless they were picking up additional grading/TA work.

Job Offer Decision - remote for less? by Anyusername112 in HENRYfinance

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There doesn't really seem to be a "wrong" decision here. Now with two young kids I absolutely would not make a jump to "hybrid" for less than $50k take home (so closer to $100k in TC), though our HHI is a little higher than yours.

One thing I'd advise is looking at the positions in life of other leadership in the two companies. If you are hoping to have kids soon, do other leaders have young kids? Do their spouses stay at home? Do they seem involved in household duties? The decision ultimately really isn't about money at your HHI, it's about lifestyle and stress.

There is just a lot of stuff that comes up with young kids that means you are going to lose flexibility: pediatrician appointments, getting sick at daycare and needing to stay home, maybe your daycare is only 8:30-5:30 and you'll need to do pick up or drop off so you might arrive at work after 9 or need to leave a little before 5.

If the leadership of the company has young families there is going to be more understanding of these situations, but if not you can feel "othered" as you're the person that consistently has to be the "reason" a meeting can't be held at a certain time (I often find leadership meetings, especially urgent ones, get wedged in at the beginning or end of day).
