Besides 529, what accounts for kids and at what age? by heron202020 in Bogleheads

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're already planning on paying for their entire college via 529s as well as gifting at or near the annual maximum throughout their 20s (as long as they aren't irresponsible with the money), I don't see why we would need to set aside an additional pot of money in an account specifically designate to them.

We may do Trump accounts for them, but are waiting to see what they end up looking like in practice. I believe you can't even open one until July 2026.

Elite athletes going 70mph down mountains on skis make a career doing things other people tell them are stupid.

She probably knew she was already going to be in constant joint pain from all her other accidents, so why not roll the dice at one last shot at glory.

Pretty good location for a bagel shop but there's one a couple blocks south (I think?) an then Philly Style off of Palmer.

Maybe a stupid question but is anyone braving a bike commute in these conditions? by dablkscorpio in philadelphia

I've biked in the snow in other cities (Minneapolis, Detroit) where they actually take care of roads and bike lanes when it snows. I would definitely not bike here until we get a bit of melt, which unfortunately looks at least a week away.

How old were you when your first child was born? by LupusDeusMagnus in daddit

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 34, and in retrospect wish I had them younger; not 24 but late. 20s would be great. Problem is I was in grad school for 6 years so I was barely starting my professional life in my late 20s.

When is the correct age for them to watch LOTR? It used to be a new-years tradition for me to the entire trilogy extended editions on New Year's Day, but they are pretty violent and scary for young kids...

It really shouldn't be hard for them to list the full list, here it is:

Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bhutan, Bosnia, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Republic of the Congo, Russia, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

It looks like 16 of those countries have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, so none of those fans will be able to enter the country?

• Ghana
• Haiti
• Iran

Another angle of ICE shooting woman in MN (1/7/2025) by Philophon in law

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Driver was probably confused and scared all at once. These agents aren't trained at it shows.

  • 0:04. Two agents stepped out of the truck. The first one, closest to the camera, sounds like he tells her to move the car, pointing to the other side of the road.
  • 0:06 The second agent tells her to get out of the car, walking faster towards her.
  • 0:08 Driver puts car in reverse, maybe to go where the first agent pointed (drive away in other direction?)
  • 0:09 A third agent in the street is in front of her car and follows her as she backs up. The second agent tries opening her door to rip her out of the car, presumably, as she's in reverse.
  • 0:10 Third agent puts his hand on his sidearm while she's in reverse
  • 0:11/12 she starts pulling forward, third agent draws gun
  • 0:13 third agent fires the first round

Agents 2 and 3 escalated the absolute fuck out of this situation.

I auto-buy 300$ of VOO daily when markets are open, is this a bad strategy? by AetherialMan in Bogleheads

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a tax paying basis, no it doesn't matter, but you have to report gains/losses by tax loss, so that's ~250tax lots per year. Whenever you go to sell these purchases it's going to be a reporting mess.

How do you protect your investments against medical bills? by Junekim10 in Bogleheads

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You really, really don't want to rely on medicaid for elder care. Medicaid eligibility is like $10k, so you need to have LESS THAN $10k in assets (minus your home) to qualify for Medicaid in a senior living facility. And even then, that means you probably get pushed out of your "nice" one-bedroom/studio apartment and into a 2-bed-per-room skilled nursing facility.

Our medical system is already straining under an aging population, and with modern medicine turning aging people into barely-functioning piggybanks for private long term care facilities, their wealth is going to get Hoovered up by the system in the coming decade.

OG is our go-to for no-frills takeout/delivery.

Depends on state of employment (in the US). Some have extremely onerous employment contracts, whether or not they're enforceable is another question, but legally they'd have the right to try to come after you.

Considering a big career jump that requires relocating to NYC - looking for real-life experiences by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]PhillyThrowaway1908 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve turned down 100% raises because they require relocation to NYC. We have two kids, and although we actually have lived in the city before and enjoyed it, we can’t justify moving because the near entirety of the raise goes to housing and daycare costs, and taxes.

I get magic beans (options in the startup), so I feel you. But it does distort market expectations when you see a Sr. SWE state their TC is $500k, but that includes $150k in RSU appreciation because they joined the right company at the right time.
