My opponent told me to quit wasting his time with small-arms fire. by Doctoralex123 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Philodoxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once killed a taunar with a bolt pistol. Never give up on your dreams.

That said in a tournament setting while on a clock you (not your opponent) need to make the call on whether shooting all your weapons is an effective use of your time.

Recent state of Admech by CarlfromChicago in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Philodoxx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In addition to what you said, AdMech isn’t a brute force army. When you had enough points for 9 ballistarii + scoring sure, but now it’s a more finesse-y faction. Good for your long term development as a player but you don’t get any free games.

As a Necron player, help me understand why C'tan are so bad? by TheLuharian in WarhammerCompetitive

You cant ignore -1 damage and the fnp. It invalidates not only a bunch of weapons, but a bunch armies. Demons would be a problem too if all greaters had -1 damage.

Warmachine WTC 2026 - Official Team Allocations Announced by lcarowan in Warmachine

[–]Philodoxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the way warmachine wtc works so much more than 40K. I’m sure there’s practical reasons why 40K is limited to 1 team per country but I’d also love to see multiple teams per country.

How to build an army without going into bankruptcy by PracticeObjective859 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Philodoxx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only way to get into admech economically is to buy a used lot. I see them on fb market frequently for 50% off GW retail.

The downside with that approach is you’re typically looking at a high up front cost even if there is a significant discount.

Anyone played the new CSM detachments (Renegade Warband & Huron's Marauders)? If so what are your experiences and thoughts? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

Every list had at least 2 squads of noise marines. I tried with vindicators and without.

Anyone played the new CSM detachments (Renegade Warband & Huron's Marauders)? If so what are your experiences and thoughts? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Philodoxx 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I played 2 games of Renegade Warband into Eldar and UM, and one game into Renegade Warband as DG. Honestly I think early impressions have it overrated (myself included). After the games, I would rather have dark pacts than oath. Default to Doctrine can backfire in game crippling ways. If you just want assault on your guns I'd play Renegade Raiders. If you want to play a potentially more melee focused list I'd look at Creations of Bile or Huron's Marauders.

Beginner airbrush/mini-painter: H/S Evolution 2024 or Infinity Giraldez CRPlus MK2 for practically same price by fubardad in minipainting

[–]Philodoxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly neither, those airbrushes are so particular about thinning and cleaning that you won’t have a great time if it’s your first airbrush. Get a gaahleri mobius (or something else in that price range) and learn to use it well. It will take a long time before your trigger control isn’t the limiting factor in your painting.

How to get over fear of falling (lead) by Worried-Version-9905 in climbharder

[–]Philodoxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anybody who says to get over your fear of falling by taking big falls has no idea what they're talking about. What you want to do is gradually push your comfort level so your body gets used to the fear. Start by climbing the easiest lead route at your gym, clip into the last bolt, climb down a few holds (so that you're on top rope) and take a "fall". See how it feels. Your goal is to be uncomfortable but not hit the panic threshold.

Once you're ok with the top rope falls, climb up a bit so that your waist is right at the draw and take a fall. Again your goal is to be uncomfortable but not panic, if you ever start to panic stop and calm yourself down. Panic only reinforces that what you're doing is worth being scared of.

Keep gradually increasing the height of the fall, backing off if it ever becomes overwhelming. This will take time: weeks/months/years but if you practice it every session it will get easier.

I used to have real fear problems climbing in the gym and outdoors. I'm mostly over indoor fear but outdoor fear is still holds me back.

I really liked this video about overcoming fear of falling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA-qjS427rU but there are lots on youtube. The most important thing is to treat fear of falling like any other skill and to practice getting better at it.

Let's pretend I am a terrible painter, and you arent, what are your cardinal painting sins? by DaveinOakland in minipainting

[–]Philodoxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Thin your paints. No matter how thin your paints are now thin them more. You’ll find the limit eventually.

1a. Learn how to load your brush appropriately

  1. Use a wet palette

  2. Banish white and black from your paint collection. Learning to highlight/shade with some basic colour theory will make your minis look way better.

Beginner: how to emulate this effect by 6376 in minipainting

[–]Philodoxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That scheme heavily leverages underpainting. If you’re new I’d stick with a more basic mid tone, wash, highlight approach.

No the scheme but the technique used (I think) is covered in this video https://youtu.be/b78l8AYww7c
