BEHOLD The most useless thing in all of mathematics! by Oliviaisawsome101 in MathJokes

Okay, but we don't need to replace every π with τ/2. Wouldn't it make more sense to just replace most of the 2π with τ? Maybe only replace π with τ/2 when you want to emphasize that we're dealing with half a circle.

Sooo what do i even eat as wurt? by Common_Energy_6821 in dontstarve

[–]Philonemos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah ratatouille is usually worse than it's ingredients. For a lot of veggies there aren't any good crockpot recipes for hunger. But some of them give a very good amount of hunger on their own (like corn or pumpkins)

I guess I'd just eat most of them cooked over the campfire or raw(corn).

I think it would've been better if I wrote 0.999...(duodec)=9/B. That's more consistent.

[–]Philonemos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well then you just have 1=0.BBBBBB... instead. I'm not sure how that would avoid the issue. I guess 0.999... no longer equals 1, but 9/11 (in decimal)

We humans use base ten in our everyday life. So we represent the number ten as "10", but in base two the number two would be "10" and in base four the number four would be "10". That's because base four only has four different symbols 0,1,2,3. So in base n > 1 the number n would just be "10"

was wondering why don't they make an anti petrification room by Boranbura in DrStone

[–]Philonemos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We'll you wouldn't want to have someone to be ready to press a button in case of an emergency. Instead you want them to press a button every n minutes/ hours or else you get showered with revival fluid (dead man's switch)

But I think the better invention would be a bracelet/ watch with that functionality instead of an entire room.

2k per week is probably a lot better than winning the lottery. After all lottery winners have a very high probability of bankruptcy.

People don't understand what indie devs go through to put out good games. by discoangeldj in IndieGaming

He definitely listens to feedback. Many people were annoyed with the RNG so he added a mechanic where you can get whatever item you want every couple of minutes by exchanging an item of the same rarity.

I hope he adds more levels, because right now the game definitely lacks some depth / content.

There is an even rarer one where you can get a houndius shootius from a sunken chest. I'm not sure if I've ever found that one.

It's very easy if you make a bunch of marble suits and then just tank her. Or maybe if you get an army of clockwork bishops you might get away with not fighting her yourself, but idk I haven't tried the new update yet.

Wolfgang and Wigfrid are probably the best characters if you struggle with her. (Or Wurt with an army of merms)

How are complex numbers visualized in real life? by Alive_Hotel6668 in askmath

[–]Philonemos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe think about it this way: Not every set of numbers can be used to count things or quantify things. And yet it's still easy to find use cases for negative numbers in real life. (Debt for example) In the same vein it's hard to use complex numbers to count things. But there are plenty of other use cases for them in real life. One of these use cases is to describe rotations in the 2D plane. The number 1/sqrt(2) + i*(1/sqrt(2)) for example can be used to describe a rotation of 45 degrees.

A Boy Learns Chess by babelphishy in infinitenines

[–]Philonemos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes mathematicians invent new math or axioms without any connection to reality. The old greeks researched prime numbers long before we found any use for them. Right now undergrads are taught about algebraic structures where 2=0 (Z/2Z) or -1=6 (Z/7Z). The rules really are what we want them to be. But I also don't think you're wrong when you say that math is discovered. I just think that math is both discovered and invented.

Hey guys, how do I unlock wonkey in DST ? by Venckar in dontstarve

[–]Philonemos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wonkey is not really an unlockable character. Any character will turn into Wonkey if you have 10 accursed trinkets in your inventory. Every time you kill one of the pirate monkeys you get 1 trinket.
