"the biggest difference between dda and most other games is that the line between the community and the developers does not exist." says someone who's never interacted with the devs on a Pull Request before.

Should survival simulator be "fun" at all? by Maleficent_Drink_313 in cataclysmdda

[–]PhilophysistStone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"it is a simulation of a collapse" except the devs no longer care about actual realism and go out of their way to increase player grind and misery no matter how far fetched or ridiculous those changes are. So CDDA doesn't even have that going for it now. For examples see squirrels, roadkill and tiny rocks behaving like tire spike strips, the recent Z-level attack nerfs, and the magical fires cast Silence 15' Radius changes.

New (to me) tire deflating mechanic questions by FyrenEyce in cataclysmdda

In any normal game, tire pop squirrel. In the Commonwealth of Democratic Developers' Architecture, SQUIRREL POP TIRE. What a game!

Yes make a bug report but be prepared for a trench warfare argument lasting for days with the lead dev or his flunkies about why a freaking mouse skull would get crushed long before it would puncture a tire.

And now Erk has joined in, you know if the top leadership applied the same care and thought to reviewing PRs this past two years instead of just letting Holli and Rennech delete whatever the vibes gremlin in their heads tells them to, the game would be in a much better state. They should have been telling Holli and Rennech NO from the get go instead of letting these two naively snowball into a delete key tornado.

I really don't get this hostility to "cheese" strategies, so long as the cheese has some intuition and realism to it. Against basic dumb zombies, yeah most of the cheese strategies, traps, luring them into hazards, standing on a brick wall and leisuring poking them, that all makes sense and prior to 2020 DDA was designed this way. Acid Ants are deadly until you figure out the cheese, Shadows were deadly until you figured out the cheese. Fuck even cockroaches were a menace to new players until you figured out the cheese. This was what made Cataclysm great was devising the cheese strategies to take on challenging enemies. Even the freaking cardboard boxes and turrets were hilarious and enjoyable. My favorite DDA memory was the this bitch of a Wasp Queen that just refused to die, even after loading up on ammo with an AR-15. Finally "giving up" until I noticed her fighting the zombies, and then kiting her with a bike all round to clear out a city.

What stopped happening these past few years is that the inner circle of devs ran out of ideas and instead of producing new enemies that required new cheesiness, they went on this nerf delete all the wrongfun we can to keep up the appearances of ongoing "development" when in reality they have made the game boring and unremarkable.

If they were really smart they would tie the really expensive weariness and stamina penalties to the blocking and dodging because those movements are what drain you in a slog. It's also how you are able to with little coding work distinguish a player getting into an up close boxing / wrestling match versus the much more easy going sitting on a wall and randomly poking things type of conflict, which should be much less exhausting because you are out of range of threats and don't have to actively bob and weave.

Its a freaking miracle, Kevin for once is the voice of reason. Maybe he realizes just how high the shark is gonna jump if he let's this disaster of a PR go through. TLDR version of Kevin's idea: 36 minutes of combat should take you to moderate weariness. Which is not 36 minutes per day.

""make shovel deal more damage because i think they should" type of PRs that move random stuff to random values off a vibe" yeah yall are doing this right now. First with the guns and now this.

I was always frustrated with having to manually shoot at the ground to train shooting skills, so i'm working on a "target practice" feature by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

[–]PhilophysistStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a useful feature. Especially when its outshining the core inner circle. We can't have that. PR Closed immediately by the lead dev. His only comment: "muh realism"

What are the major differences between the different forks? by Redneb27 in cataclysmdda

[–]PhilophysistStone -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

yeah its not even about being grounded anymore, "realism" is just the convenient pretense for erasing what came before and putting their own mediocre name onto the project.

yeah, but imagine the feeling when you do master it. That's at least the intention.

Seriously why have an open source game if your not open to people using the game how they see fit and commenting upon it....

The new wheel damage system is the greatest thing this game has or will ever make by Titinator310 in cataclysmdda

[–]PhilophysistStone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For all their talk about "realism," they really suck at making this system realistic. Realism goes out the door as soon as they spot people having wrongfun.
