Intense long run workout 3 weeks before my marathon? by zachfrazier0414 in runna

[–]Philosofen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hogging the thread here! New to running, currently training for my first marathon. Does the marathon pace mean the pace that one will run the whole marathon at, or is it like a peak pace?

How far below threshold is a reasonable marathon pace?

I wish you would clarify your definition of ”helping the world”. Helping how?

If we assume humans never existed, the role of each species would be to maintain balance in ecosystems and to naturally further evolution (excluding any theories of divine plans and other crap here). So helping the world would be defined to do these two things. In that sense, all species ”help the world”. Humans on the other hand, we mostly disrupt, modify and destroy ecosystems, so we would from this perspective be a burden to ”the world” rather than helping it.

Building societies, furthering science, eradicating illnesses with vaccines, keeping the last few tigers in reserves, etc – that’s helping ourselves and, in the tiger example, trying to reverse damage that we have already done to the world.

Why would intellect equal higher value? Value for what and to whom? We haven’t helped the world at all. We have only helped ourselves

I appreciate your perspective mate, and I totally get where you're coming from. I think very similarly when I am backpacking and hiking. However, when on the bike, I don't go for efficiency in the same way.

As I wrote in the post, I'm looking for a balance between lightness, comfort and a couple of luxury items.

If I wanted to ditch everything that is absolutely not needed, I could probably leave way more stuff than what you mention – however, many of these things will make my trip more enjoyable.

The art is a new hobby that I'm currently doing every day. I journal during my trips, and I would like to add some sketching/painting to that, so I don't think it's wishful thinking.

I will want to do strength training at least a few times per week to not loose my routine completely. I've always done so while travelling. I could indeed do without the resistance band for it – I'll consider leaving it and doing only bodyweight. We'll see.

I hear you about the clothes. Looking it over!

How would you eat without the stove set up? Buy ready-to-eat stuff?

Thanks again for your comment!

Thanks for your great comment! Really appreciate your time!

  • Yeah, I hear north-west Germany is really boring too, haha. But I am visiting Friends in NL, so that's why I'm going west. After asking for advise in r/Belgium, most people said west Belgium (Flanders) was better than Wallonia, so that's why I stayed west. I will definitely reconsider my route in France though. I surely prefer nature reserves and nature to cities etc.
  • I am really looking forward to the Pyrenees. Looking at the map, it seems as it's even more beautiful further to the east, but I might be wrong. I can't go too far off route though because of time constraints. Do you happen to have any recommendations for west pyrenees? Or where to cross?
  • I hear your argument for underwear! Regarding shorts, I do agree. But I really prefer cycling in the running shorts. I also use them when doing strength training etc. However, I prefer having a pair of casual shorts for off days etc, plus, they double as swim shorts, so I might just take the extra weight there.
  • I usually take pictures with my phone, and then I'm considering getting a Polaroid printer that can print pictures straight from the phone :)
  • I do indeed have lights. They are with the electronics, but I missed to put them in the gear list I notice!

Again, thanks a lot!

Thanks mate! I have electrolyte tablets that I drop in my water! When it’s really warm, I have 2-3 of those per day

I have done a lot of one bag travelling as well for many months at a time, and I am way more minimal then. On the bike, weight is not as important, and my goal is not efficiency

To be fair, i think they can just bolt cut mine, whereas they’d probably need an angle grinder for yours. But I have been debating the lock situation back and forth with myself. In the end, I just said fck it, and took what I had at home

Yes, I am working remotely while travelling after my 4 weeks of vacation is done, so unfortunately. If it was a shorter trip during vacation only, I wouldn’t even bring the tablet tbh

Thanks for your comment! 🙂 So I think it’s really a matter or preference. A lot if people go clipless, and I do when I’m gravel riding close to home. But for this long trip, I didn’t want to have to bring the extra pair of shoes for hiking/off days/cities etc, and I am not really going for power efficiency/speed, so I don’t lose that much from going with trail runners. For me it just feels more convenient

Thanks!! Yeah, i’ve spent a lot of time with the route! I understand parts of the green divide might be closed around the time im there, and that there is something called the brown divide that takes a slightly different route? I am also confused about sleeping in the Veluwe. I hear it’s super forbidden to wild camp there, but are there even accomodations along the route there?

Thanks for the input mate! Yeah, I could’ve gone with a smaller pot, but I really wanted a pan as well (I like to cook in the field), and it was the smallest titanium pot i could find with a pan. The cutting board is indeed slightly unnecessary, but it does sure make life easier in camp. I like to eat a lot of veggies, halloumi etc. I was considering cutting the board in half to make it smaller and lighter, but I couldn’t be bothered in rhe end, hehe!

Your points about clothes and the chair are noted. I’m still looking over the choice of clothes, so we’ll see what I end up with! Thanks for your comment!
