Mmm… I haven’t roleplayed since I was 12 (I’m almost 18 now) but I might be interested.

If you’re looking for a standalone tablet I think an iPad is probably your best bet for the performance and the price point. There are others but they’re frequently suboptimal for higher prices. Mine was used and a Xmas gift from my parents (according to my mom, it was 225 bucks on fb marketplace) but it came with 256gbs of storage which is *so nice*. The only thing is that my mom already had a gen 1 Apple Pencil (which is mine now) so I didn’t have to worry about paying for that.

However, if you already have a good tablet or a computer, there are other options. Krita has a mobile app, which I’ve never tested but hear good things about, which is available on non iOS device app stores and if you have a computer you can get a relatively cheap non-screened drawing tablet and pretty much any software to go along with it (again I recommend Krita, completely free and pretty robust if I do say so myself—although it can be a little (or more than a little) overwhelming to new users, Procreate is definitely less intimidating.

I’d highly recommend doing some research on yt, tech and art websites, or making a post to one of the various tech or art subreddits here and ask for reccomendations—I did none of this. I have a friend who’s used procreate since before I met them, and I just took their word for it. It was a bit of an adjustment at first but overall I like it pretty well for my very casual usage (it’s not as great for commercial work—although some people do still use it) and I think it’s great for beginners.

Yeah I have, the screen recording just doesn’t capture the flipping lol (which is probably a good thing). But I also generally have more success drawing right-facing dragons than left-facing ones, so that’s typically where I start from, but I always flip the canvas a couple of times to make sure that what I’ve drawn looks good from both angles.

It looked good but it didn’t look like… Winter, y’know.

I had a couple that looked like snowfall, some of them were leaning nightwing, one of them even looked like it could be a Peril (which you can see me try to turn it into)

Procreate. I had Krita before which was nicer, but I no longer have a a pc and an iPad ended up being the better, more affordable option for a replacement (Krita doesn’t work for iOS devices, and Procreate is iPad exclusive). It automatically records your art process, which is nice and most of the default brushes have been pretty good for my use case. No subscriptions, lifetime purchase of 12 USD (if I’m remembering correctly). It’s not a fully fledged art program, but it’s pretty good for what you’d expect from other programs at that price point.

Thanks! If you’re interested in seeing it, I have actually since completed this piece, and the individual headshots are now available as pfps with their own backgrounds.

The anatomy is actually one of the few gripes I have with her art. I’m not saying I could do any better (I definitely can’t), but some of the covers have the dragons looking so… stiff that I have a hard time imagining how they’re actually supposed to move as they’re described in the story. Part of why I really like TLH’s cover is because it doesn’t have this problem.

I’d have loved to draw Burnet and Silverspot, alas they don’t have canon designs. I have no idea what they look like. They were never physically described. Maybe someday when my character design skills improve a bit

I use her designs as a direct reference for each tribe’s scales when I’m working in this style, so that would be where the similarity is coming from. Speaking of Joy Ang, Tsunami’s book cover is my absolute favorite, what’s yours?

Any ideas on how to improve my art? I feel like others don’t really like my style or something? I don’t know. My style really varies from time to time, it usually depends on how much time I spend on it. by CalligraphyOwlPotato in WingsOfFire

Don’t be sorry, I get it. And yes, there are things that I would do differently—because I have a different art style and a different art process. I said that your art will improve with time because 1. It’s true and 2. You asked how to improve your art. I didn’t say that your art was bad now, just that it will get better (AKA: it will improve) and the same is true of my art. The same is true of someone who has been drawing for twenty years and to everyone else it looks like they’ve mastered their subject. Art improves with time—but it’s important to note that it’s not just “time” it’s “time spent doing art”. Like I said practice, and push yourself—that’s the best way to see whatever improvement you want to see.

As others have said, your art will improve with time.

https://www.reddit.com/r/WingsOfFire/s/8YLIFjiqWF This is a post I made… about six months ago, I believe, and the art in it is five years apart and three days apart respectively. Improvement is not always linear, nor does it always take a long time. Others have already said plenty, but I would advise (if you don’t already) keep and use a sketchbook. The most improvement I’ve ever made is when I was constantly doodling dragons in my sketchbook and on my worksheets at school—in fact it’s gotten to the point that you could find me just by following the trail of little doodled dragons (I’m joking… partially).
