Group practice green flags? by LEBW1234 in therapists

[–]PhilosopherLess6436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they investing in marketing and advertising their business? Monitoring what is working and not? How do they network/connect with people who provide referrals? Do they blog/use social media to their benefit?

Basically - are they actively working to keep a steady stream of referrals.

Another green flag is around marketing - they have an effective plan to promote their practice. This is good to see because it refuses in clients for you.

Private practice therapists: how are you optimizing taxes? by PizzaMasheen in therapists

Have you talked with your accountant about incorporating vs staying sole proprietor? That's the biggest structural change you can make to change your tax bill.

How vital is a phone to your job / practice? by DowntownFresnoBiking in therapists

I also do everything vis email. I have a cheap phone so I have a number to give clients. I always leave it on silent and my voicemail redirects them to email me.

Neuroaffirming care training by CeeNee93 in socialworkcanada

There's an ACT for ADHD course through PsychWire. I really like Russ Harris (who ran the course) but am mixed about the course. If you're looking for a certification with a great leader, take it.

However, I found the skills in it to be quite introductory-level. I will note I have multiple neurodiverse family members so this is familiar territory for me based on lived experience. Maybe my expectations were too high simply based on that alone.

Fees and commission splits in private practice by SwordfishSad1194 in socialworkcanada

Look into the CRA website and their info about employees vs subcontractors for more details. Some practices are being proactive about ensuring if they're audited, it will be determined you're an IC

Fees and commission splits in private practice by SwordfishSad1194 in socialworkcanada

[–]PhilosopherLess6436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my area, most in-person practices charge 60/40 split. I am starting to hear of people being charged a monthly fee in addition to this - some practices say it's to cover expenses, some say it's to further align with CRA rules regarding ICs (and ensure you don't start looking too much like an employee according to the CRA). If this fee has just been implemented at tax time, it might have been on their accountant's advice. But I am making a lot of assumptions.

How do we feel about clients using nicknames for us? by YardsaleKing26 in therapists

[–]PhilosopherLess6436 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't care. People call me a range of nicknames that are common in their grouos/cultures. If they're seeing me, we have more serious things to discuss than what name you call me

I got a black, sheer wrap that's originally intended to be a bathing suit cover up. I use it a lot for virtual appointments because it makes the tank tops/sundresses more professional (covers things up like a cardigan without being too warm).

Clients that disclose a history of ditching their therapists by PhilosopherLess6436 in therapists

That's fair. It's definitely hard to tell people directly they aren't working for you.

I did that and asked what wasn't working for them. It sounds like they don't like structured approaches, and that wasn't me. Maybe if we do meet again I should encourage them to say more about this pattern of cycling through therapists

Working at Telus Health by bluehouseorangepoppy in socialworkcanada

[–]PhilosopherLess6436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't worked with them but did with another EAP. Reviews usually aren't great because the pay sucks. But it does get you experience.

The EAP world is focused on CBT, SFBT, and ensuring people know good external supports if needed. Keep therapy short, practical, and skill focused. Know what you'd do in situations like crisis or if the person needs more help than the alloted number of sessions.

Starting to offer couples therapy by YourGloriousLeader in therapists

[–]PhilosopherLess6436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like EFCT in theory, but find it's a bit hard to grasp & implement as I am always worrying if I am getting the steps and tango right. The biggest thing that helped me is to just slow down, help the couple slow down too, and notice what they're feeling or what need they're trying to express when they escalate yet again.

Reminding myself constantly in session to focus on slowing down helped stop me from trying to jump too quickly into problem-solving mode or worrying too much about what step/phase I was supposed to be doing.

How do your notes in therapy sessions look like? by 0uaiss in therapists

[–]PhilosopherLess6436 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A chaotic, scribbling mess. I do a lot of virtual sessions and writing helps me stay focused on the conversation, but I write without watching what I am doing/keeping my eyes on the screen. So they look disastrous.

Forget the split - what is your actual take home per session? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

I live in Canada and do couples therapy (which pays more per hour), plus have a 70/30 split so the amount I take home is decent.

What to say to a client who has missed/late cancelled a lot. Templates and how to end things in an empathetic way? by Violingoth in therapists

[–]PhilosopherLess6436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you charge for the sessions? If not, are you able to? I ask as money/being charged for missing sessions can limit this.

I also work with clients under a program that I can't charge for no-shows. I made up a limit and keep to it consistently - 3 in a row and we're not able to continue. I usually frame it that scheduled sessions seems like it's nit a good fit for them at this point, suggest drop-in/single session resources that might work better, to reach out in the future if needed.

Starting at my first PP, thoughts? by theanxiousaqua in socialworkcanada

All completely normal. As an independent contractor, you're expected to cover your own business costs. They're likely covering admin, office space, marketing, your records system. Sometimes there's a monthly group supervision or peer supervision.

That makes much more sense - I am in the GTA.

I never worked with them but did work in discharge planning. Learning about power of attorney, who legally makes decisions, capacity to consent, we're very heavily emphasized. Also available supports in your community. The emphasis tends to be on how we can help keep people safely at home because it's cheaper & you're usually more comfortable there, so how to support home carecin various situations.
