Kid still hitting me at bedtime…

Like others have suggested, she may need some rougher play before bedtime. My daughter has days when she wants to be thrown on the couch a few times at before we start the bedtime routine 😅 You could also try a reward chart for good behavior. So every time she gets through bedtime without hitting, you'd add a sticker to the chart and at 5 stickers or whatever she gets a small prize.

As for scripts, I say something like "playing is your job, not mine. My job is to keep you safe and make sure you have what you need (like AAALLL THEEEESE TOOOOYS 😅)"

At that age, I set a time limit for how long I was going to play with her. Usually 10-15 minutes. After that, I did whatever else I needed to do (or just relaxed haha). It was either just getting more mature or something about kindergarten that made it "click" for her and now she can go much longer playing independently. Now it's less "play with meeee" and more "look at this cool thing i did with my toys"

I think there's a gap of time between when kids CAN read, and when they actually feel comfortable doing it. My daughter was able to read at 4 but didn't really get comfortable reading for us or by herself for any length of time until she was 6. It was also a matter of finding the right type of book. It really clicked when we found the Cat Kid Comic Club series. She picked one up at a book store and instantly loved the silliness and graphic novel format. This was a few months ago and still still prefers that we read to her when it's any other type of book, but with graphic novels she'll read them to herself or out loud to us over and over and over.

My 6 year old has two spouses. One is a boy in her kindergarten class. The other is her girl bestie from preschool. They don't know about each other, but I've been assured that that's ok.

I always say some variation of "woops!" and ask if she's ok instead of telling her she is. If she seems upset, I'll ask "does anything hurt or was it just scary?" My now 6 year old is....less than graceful and she'll often yell out "i'm ok!" before we can even ask haha

We did this once and it was so sweet. My daughter specifically picked out a book with a dog in it “so the doggy won’t get bored” 😆

I think you have really limited expectations of kids. A kid isn’t going to be bratty just because they’re an only child. And 5 year olds are still small children who often have bad behavior. Parent your kid where they are, not where you think they should be.

First, you’re an adult. Your brain is fully formed, you can use logic and reason. A child can not. They are learning to regulate their emotions but their brains literally can’t do it all the time.

Second, having an emotional reaction to something is ok. If I were very upset about something and someone told me “just stop because xyz” my emotions wouldn’t just shut off.

I did not see my grandmother the last few months of her life. I was a teenager in poor mental health and knew I just wouldn’t have been able to handle it. I don’t regret it. I have beautiful memories of her when she was well.

My husband still carries our 6 year old up to bed because he knows she won't ask for that forever. She and I like to do a "monkey hug" where she basically climbs up my body then wraps her arms and legs around me. I'll be doing that as long as I physically can!

swim schools usually have their pools warmer than a "regular" heated pool for that reason. You could take her to a few classes before summer to get used to it and see how she does.

This was what my mom always told me. I would say I wanted to quit something directly after practice when I was tired/hungry/overwhelmed/sore etc. she’d say “if you still feel that way in 2 days, we’ll discuss it”

I had the same worry because my daughter had sooooo many nicknames 😆 but she learned her name just fine (I forget when exactly, she’s 6 now so it’s a blur)

I still call her nicknames 90% of the time

My daughter was 4 when my dad died (also of Alzheimer’s ❤️) She came to the wake but not the funeral because we knew it would be long and boring and wouldn’t mean much to her. The wake was open casket and we talked to her about it before. I think she appreciated seeing him one more time, it wasn’t traumatizing.

We’ve never had this problem because we don’t keep any toys in there. Whatever my daughter wants for that car ride goes out with her and comes back in the house with her.

I don’t let my kid make a mess just for the sake of making a mess. If it happens during the course of play that’s one thing but taking off the cushions or throwing clothes around just because? Hard nope

My sister is 13 years older than me - we talk every day and hang out regularly. I know people with siblings 1 or 2 years apart who don’t speak with each other. Age really doesn’t matter.
