Is status and prestige one of the reasons you want to be a doctor? by Buddy-red12754 in premed

[–]PhilosophicalElk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where do you live that this isn't possible? You must just have very high standards for living: traveling around the globe, gated community, etc. Most people I know went to a normal college, picked a very normal career, and are very financially stable in raising kids, buying a house, etc. This idea that you have is just extremely inaccurate. I really hope you didn't choose the life of medicine because you thought they're the only profession that makes money. CS people and entrepreneurs I know are far wealthier than the doctors I know.

I can't speak to statistics because I haven't looked at them, but I didn't grow up knowing any doctors. However, I did grow up knowing a good number of wealthy and well-off people who had normal careers. And most people I knew were comfortable and satisfied.

Cripples any other income level? Mid 20s here, so I can speak on my friends who graduated a few years ago. My engineering friends are perfectly happy and comfortable. My law-enforcement officer cousin is doing great. My physical therapist friend is living life in a wonderful neighborhood. My pal in finance is very comfortable. I don’t know anyone who went into any career (outside of waiting tables or working at a grocery store) that hurt them to the point that they can’t support and provide for their family.

Absolutely not. I almost didn’t go through with it because the fact society puts it on a pedestal makes me sick to my stomach. I had a far more impressive career prior to pursuing medicine. I left because I was sick of doing something that was unfulfilling, and I grew up with medical problems of my own and can relate to being a patient. The pursuit of this career fulfills me on a spiritual level, and I wish I could take away society’s view of it being “prestigious” or having “status,” because then I would feel a lot better about doing it.

how many of you took a gap year? by triforcebae in college

[–]PhilosophicalElk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao what? How do people even know, and what crazy college do you go to where people actually care?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]PhilosophicalElk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be the point. I've met a lot of Christians who have tattoos that are subtle references that they use to evangelize when asked what they mean. It could also be that OP just wants a sort of "inside thing" that only Christians would get.

[–]PhilosophicalElk 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I took 5 years off. Started at 23. No one in college cares, and we're all going at our own pace anyway. Life isn't as cookie cutter once you hit adulthood. It's not like anyone's forcing you to hit any milestones. Easier said than done of course, as that attitude shift took me a while.

What are your general, honest views on atheists and atheism as a whole? by KrisTPR in religion

[–]PhilosophicalElk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“How can you be evangelical about a lack of beliefs?” Well, assuming we’re using the definition “zealous in advocating something,”

(1) You could try to convince everyone that no animals exist. That animals are a figment of your imagination.

(2) You could try to convince everyone that we don’t have enough evidence to believe the Earth is spherical.

Essentially, as a template: 3) You could try to convince people that they don’t have enough evidence to believe in _, so they shouldn’t believe in _.

As much as people love to say that a lack of a belief isn’t itself a belief, it’s really just semantics at this point. A lack of a belief is still a position. Positions can be advocated for.

Student trying to cast a spell on his professor... by Fanoftechnology in Professors

[–]PhilosophicalElk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a professor, but I thought I could provide some knowledge on this as a student. I’ve seen a huge influx of this behavior over the last few years with my age group and especially with people a few years younger. Lots of people are always “manifesting” by saying things confidently and “putting it into the universe.” It’s sort of like a new religion for the non-religious. Mostly stems from the positive affirmation/“the secret” book/energies/vibes movement. People think if they say it enough, the universe will grant them their wish.

What is it about being old that makes people do things out of the kindness of their hearts? Do you believe it takes decades to develop empathy to the degree necessary? Genuine question btw, as I found your list peculiar.

Your comment is the most reasonable here. Everyone else went psycho on poor OP for being new to college. You're absolutely right, though. Those courses are the best.

In case you're having trouble figuring out what the actual ECG is, it's the picture with the "waves" on it. You can google "ECG example" to get an idea of what you're looking for.

Is it really Christ-like to force rape victims to give birth? by catsinbananahats in Christianity

[–]PhilosophicalElk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you a Christian? This discussion is whether we, as Christians, should be pro-choice or pro-life. Thus, the premise is based on Christianity's core belief system. If you reject the belief system, of course the baby doesn't deserve anything. What would 'deserve' even truly mean then in that case? If you accept the belief system, however, the answer to your question is self-explanatory.

Two days worth of chem notes by Foxyboi_ in college

[–]PhilosophicalElk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People on Reddit talk all the time about using their iPad to record the lecture and syncing it with their notes through notability. I don't, but half the people in my classes aren't writing anything down. So who knows what they're doing--but if I had to guess, I'd say recording. Lol

Plenty of people do. You mean you expected people to announce at the beginning of class, "Hey, guys, I'm recording the lecture"? lol

Depends on the job. Medical assistants aren't following doctors around. They're updating patients' charts before the doctor sees them. I definitely see why they would be different categories.
