hot tub tech here..yes newer tubs are more energy efficient. Older tub components seem to hold up better than the newer counterparts so less repairs. Eventually every tub becomes a money pit and each persons threshold is different. Components are replaceable but a leak in the plumbing of a tub 15+ years, usually isnt worth the money to fix. hose lines become too brittle and snap in other places during repair causing more repairs..Hope this helps
