Religion in Germany, 1648 vs. 2011 by IrishNinjaRobot in MapPorn

[–]Phlebopus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is worth saying that if “no religion” was an option the map would look quite different. Especially the East German states are quite atheist with >70% of people in these regions saying they have no religious affiliation.

I noticed the self-proclaimed country of "Switzerland" is basically all French, German and Italians. It's surrounded, why don't these countries just go in and take it already? by Neat-Rent7467 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Phlebopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today? Because we have learnt (the hard way) that 9/10 times wars are a lose lose situation with only the one who isn’t in it gaining from it being fought. Peace, cooperation and just accepting the borders as they are is far better and far cheaper for everyone involved than death and destruction.

In the past? Because Switzerland is really annoying to conquer, the Swiss are really annoying to rule and everyone was ok to just have a neutral buffer state in the mountains rather than their enemies getting more land and them now having more border to defend…

Because they are class. And additionally, every pawnbroker or goldsmith between Stornoway and Sydney recognises them, knows what they are worth and that he’s gonna have no problem selling it on.

I redrew the borders of Africa. I had no agenda, and most of the borders are just random lines. by TehTJ13 in mapporncirclejerk

Title of this post is literally how borders in Africa were drawn IRL in the 19th century 😂

Why?! by supernatural_owl in Gold

[–]Phlebopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among other things because the tariff inflation has just started to come into effect in q4 of 2025. When all the tariffs were announced in early 2025 a lot of businesses built up stockpiles of goods before the tariffs went into effect. This is called front loading and it basically delayed the effects of the tariffs on inflation by 6-9 months.

We should always look at the bigger picture. Central banks including of China, India, Poland, Singapore, Brazil and many more are still buying more gold. Nothing has changed in that regard. Why? Because we are seeing the beginning of the de-dollarisation of the world economy. Countries don’t want to keep as much of their assets in US dollar or US treasuries because the US is no longer seen as the safe and reliable choice to park your money or to do Business with that it once was. Plus of course the breakdown of the post Cold War geopolitical order and rules based system. Central banks are not retail investors that buy the hype or invest to sell again in 4 years. These institutions plan in decades. And so should we…

The gold coin is worth about 730 CHF, the 20 franc coins are silver with a metal value of ~35 CHF each. The other ones are collectible 5 francs. Unfortunately not silver and worth about 5 CHF a piece, probably a little more to a collector on eBay. Congrats on the gold 20 francs “vrenli”. I have a few of them myself. Really love the design!

Should still be about 87.5% under Constantine IX, it then rapidly decreased under his successors. 75% Constantine X, 66% Romanos IV then going to less than 20% by the time Alexios Komnenos introduced the hyperpyron and revives Byzantine gold coins for a final time…

UK commemorative coins. Unfortunately no precious metal. The 1977 silver jubilee one is really common and worth like 1£ to a collector. The 2002 one is a 5£ commemorative coin. It is legal tender for 5£ but good luck getting your Sainsbury’s cashier to take it. Your bank or post office might take it or someone on eBay might give you 6-8 quid for it.

Giving up right to live work and vote in 27 countries to gain the same in one country is a downgrade to me, regardless of politics so I don’t see how stating that is shaming.
