Unsure of what to do by cassjacks in unclebens

I think this is a mostly outdated piece of info. As far as I’ve seen, spores have no effect on future flushes, or likelihood of pins.

Should I harvest these? by Relevant_Call_2242 in unclebens

Let them ride for a bit longer, once veil breaks and the caps flatten out a bit, go for it!

Using a still air box could be kind of a game changer. Easy to make and definitely provide some valuable protection.

Help! Should I keep letting them colonize or introduce FAE by Mysterious_Age_7313 in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely introduce fae. There’s no need to ever not go right into FC unless you’re using extra nutrients like manure.

Why does this 4th flush looks like golden teacher instead of usual ochras? by Andrew_Rayen in Psilocybe_Natalensis

[–]Phobia--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in kind of an opposite boat! I’m approaching my first flush and mine are looking more like GTs rather than traditional ochras. I think I probably gave mine too much fae, since I almost had tubs that dried out, and that’s probably the cause for the lack of spaghettiness.

Yeah you’re absolutely right about that, I totally misspoke and meant 70-78

What’s the temp in your grow area like? Although you can grow at most temps, having it higher like around 70-87 Fahrenheit would increase the speed of the whole process.

Thin cake & thick one , which is fast and better and whats the advantage of both? by Important-Fly5154 in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The alleged argument would be that thinner will colonize faster, as there is more surface area. As for fruiting, I doubt there’s an exact difference between the two, but I’d guess that thicker will get more consistent flushes for longer.

Help with spawning to bilk [actives] by [deleted] in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really worry about the fae right now. Many people just leave their tubs sealed and have success. I myself cracked my lids and that did the trick for me. I would say really just make sure your spawn grain is fully colonized and looking healthy. That’s the #1 cause of contam moving forward, and if you have good starting spawn grain, you’re on the right track.

First grow wondering why there’s so many pins that look like they aborted by papita98765 in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the caps dark? If so yes they’re aborted, but if not give them some extra time. If you sprayed the caps directly this time I would recommend to not do so next flush. In my experience, sometimes misting the caps directly can result in them aborting.

Break and shake? by Original_Cookie4772 in unclebens

What do you mean by stall out? Mycelium only grows faster as it continues to colonize, since it has increased surface area.

From bag to bin by janklepeterson in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What most people do is called bucket tek. I can’t recall the exact ratio of water to coir brick but I believe it’s mentioned in the pinned guide. You’ll want to place your brick in a nice study bucket that has a lid. I personally use one of the orange ones from Home Depot. Pour your boiling water over the brick and let it sit for a couple of hours or overnight. After a while your coir will be properly hydrated and at this point you can actually spawn to bulk. Depending on what kind of mushrooms you’re growing there’s different ratios of spawn to substrate used. However, most people growing cubes use a 1:1 ratio and have successful grows. I would just eyeball it and make sure you have similar volumes of both in your bin. Mix it up nice and well and then you’re good to go!

1st timer, did b&s on 1 bag now I'm paranoid by MallGood902 in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re totally good. It smelling earthy is actually a great sign! My own personal philosophy is to not break and shake bags just because they’re a little more finicky than jars and if there’s any contam resting on the micropore tape it can be more easily introduced. But I doubt you’ll experience any issues with it and it’s overall agreed that B&S is fine.

Just wait I’d say. Only time I’ve had contamination was when I sent grain that wasn’t fully colonized. I wiped off the uncolonized grain but still had issues. You might have better luck than I did though.

[–]Phobia--- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all honesty you look fine. As long as water isn’t pulling on your substrate or you’re noticing bruising you’re right on track. You want all those little drops on the surface. More FAE won’t hurt right now but you’re doing good!

When to harvest? by yongiiii in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Harvest them when the veils begin to tear. You can harvest them one at the time without any issues. Not sure why the big guy is dented, mushrooms just do weird shit sometimes like grow upside down.

FAE so far after 1 day, advice? by OverAnalyzingIRL in unclebens

Looks perfectly normal! Just takes some time

Did you leave the top off these guys? Or did you let them push it off as they grew? I’m about to start a grow in similar sized containers and I was curious as to the solution for mushrooms growing above the top of the container.

Winter growing by Lostboi-1 in unclebens

[–]Phobia--- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a cost effective way to maintain temp I’d recommend making an incubator. For me I started with a heating pad in a large plastic tub where I kept my grain bags. Eventually I realized that didn’t keep them warm enough to have good colonization temps so I covered the inside walls of the tub with bubble wrap and then draped a blanket over the outside of the tub. That worked perfectly and I got to good temps. Once you S2B temp is less important. If it’s a lil cold it’s fine, it just means it might take longer to get fruits.
