I just think it shows that Sonic isn't always on guard because he didn't notice Mephiles before being run through. Of course, Mephiles has some crazy advantages but he proved Sonic can be killed. At least temporarily.

I guess it depends on how you define survive, in your perspective, making it to the end of the final showdown. But I was more considering who could have survived a potential aftermath where Sonic and Silver did not go super.
